Box Score The Wright State baseball team held an early 1-0 lead, only to see Michigan State score four times in the fifth for a 4-1 decision Saturday in the season opener for both teams at Vanderbilt's Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tennessee.
WSU opened the scoring with a run in the second. With one out, John Brodner singled through the left side and moved up to second one out later on a balk. That brought up freshman catcher Sean Murphy and he delivered in his first collegiate at bat, a double to the gap in left center to plate Brodner.
The Raiders, behind the pitching of Travis Hissong, maintained that 1-0 edge until Michigan State tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth, an inning that saw the Spartans collect just one hit as they took advantage of two walks and three hit by pitches.
Wright State had two on in the seventh on a Mark Fowler walk and an Andrew McCafferty hit to right, but left both stranded.
McCafferty, also making his college debut, paced the Raider offense with three hits. The bullpen of Logan Blair, Jacob Burk and Darion Nunn combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.
Wright State and Michigan State wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon Eastern time.
