Box Score 2 Wright State split a Horizon League doubleheader with Green Bay at the WSU Softball Field Sunday, winning the opener 5-3 before falling to the Phoenix in the nightcap 9-4.
The Raiders scored a run in the first inning of game one on a Green Bay error, only to see the Phoenix tie it in the top of the second and go ahead with two in the third. The deficit was cut to 3-2 on doubles by Libby Pfeffer and Kacie Rapshus in the third, but Wright State still trailed by a run as it came to bat in the bottom of the sixth.
With one out, pinch-hitter Taylor Knore singled to center and an Angie Clark hit advanced pinch-runner Kate Pfeffer to second. Jess Gorman was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Reagan Stofcheck dropped a single to right to tie the game. Libby Pfeffer walked to force in the go-ahead run and Alexis Mayle followed with a hit through the left side of the infield to plate Gorman and make it 5-3.
Green Bay had the potential tying runs on base in the seventh, but Krystian DeWitt pitched out the jam to preserve the win. With the victory, the senior righthander tied Kristin Bultinck (2000-03) for the most career wins by a WSU pitcher with 47. DeWitt (3-7) scattered seven hits and a walk while striking out six.
The Phoenix took a quick 2-0 lead in the second game with two in the first before WSU answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch. Green Bay added a run in the third, but again the Raiders responded with a run of their own on a RBI single by Libby Pfeffer.
Green Bay, however, exteded its lead with three in the fourth and three more in the sixth. Wright State scored twice in the fifth as Kortney Tackett singled in Pfeffer and Knore added a sacrifice fly, but could get no closer.
Wright State (6-19, 3-1 Horizon) now hits the road for 10 straight games, starting on Wednesday, April 2, with a 2:00 doubleheader at Bowling Green.
