Baseball Splits Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team split its first two home games of the season Friday at Nischwitz Stadium, falling to Bradley 5-1 in the opener before defeating Dayton in the nightcap 8-4.

In the opener, WSU starter Travis Hissong and Brave starter David Koll hooked in a scoreless pitchers duel that lasted until the Raiders picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Joe Ford tripled down the right field line and scored one out later as John Brodner reached on an error.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Bradley exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh, the big blow being a three-run home run off the bat of Tyler Leffler.

Hissong finished with 11 strikeouts in his seven innings of work while Isaac Beller added another in his two innings.

The WSU offense came alive in the second game against Dayton, scoring five times in the bottom of the first.  Ford led off the frame with a home run down the left field line and after Michael Timm singled in a run, he scored on a Brodner double to right.  A wild pitch resulted in the fourth run and the final run came in on a hit to right by Sean Murphy.

Dayton cut the margin to 5-3 with a run in the second and two more in the third, only to see Wright State answer with three in its half of the third.  Singles by Kieston Greene and Brodner along with a Brad Macciocchi sacrifice put two runners into scoring position and both came in as Murphy doubled down the left field line.  Murphy later scored on a passed ball to make it 8-3.

The Flyers added a run in the sixth, but would get no more against WSU starter Joey Hoelzel (2-2), who struck out 12 in a complete-game effort, allowing six hits and no walks.

Murphy had two hits and three RBI to pace the Raider offense while Andrew McCafferty, Brodner and Macciocchi also had two hits each.

Wright State (4-9) hosts Bradley Saturday at 4:00 before hosting Dayton again on Sunday at 3:00.
