Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team took both ends of a doubleheader at Youngstown State Friday, winning the opener 5-3 and the nightcap 2-0.
The Raiders scored an unearned run in the second innings of game one and extended the lead to 3-0 with two in the third. After Angie Clark led off with a walk and Jess Gorman singled up the middle, a Reagan Stofcheck bunt put both runners into scoring position. Libby Pfeffer had a sacrifice fly to plate Clark and Taylor Knore followed with a hit to drive in Gorman.
Knore knocked in another run in the fifth as she tripled in Gorman, who was hit by a pitch, and later scored on a Becka Peterson hit to make it 5-0.
YSU rallied in the late innings with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The Penguins then loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Krystian DeWitt pitched out of the jam with a ground out to end the game.
DeWitt (8-10) struck out seven in a complete-game effort to earn the win.
The second game was a pitcher's duel between WSU's Montana Wear and Youngstown State's Kayla Haslett, with the game remaining scoreless through six innings.
The Raiders, though, finally broke the deadlock with two runs in the seventh. With two outs and pinch-runner Rachael Oakley on first, pinch-hitter Alexis Mayle singled through the left side and Jess Gorman followed with a triple to right center to drive in two.
Wear (5-10) then retired the Penguins in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win. The sophomore righthander allowed just two hits and a walk in pitching her third shutout of the season and her career, striking out three.
Wright State (13-26, 8-4 Horizon) looks to complete the series sweep with the finale Saturday at noon.
