Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team split a doubleheader at Bowling Green Wednesday, winning the opener 3-0 before falling 6-5 in eight innings in the nightcap.
In the opener, it was a pitcher's duel between WSU's Krystian DeWitt and BGSU's Jamie Kertes as the game was scoreless heading into the sixth. The Raiders, though, broke through in that frame as Alexis Mayle singled up the middle and Kacie Rapshus followed with a double to drive in Kristi Boreing, who reached on a fielder's choice as Mayle was retired at second.
Wright State then picked up two big insurance runs in the seventh. Becka Peterson led off with a hit up the middle and after Jess Gorman reached on a single through the right side, Reagan Stofcheck delivered a two-run double to make it 3-0.
DeWitt (4-7) pitched her first shutout of the season, allowing just five singles and a walk while striking out six. The win was the 48th of DeWitt's career as a Raider, eclipsing Kristin Bultinck (2000-03) for the most victories in Wright State history.
DeWitt's six strikeouts give her 564 in her career, which is just 17 shy of tying Bultinck for the top spot in program history.
Stofcheck, Libby Pfeffer, Rapshus and Peterson each had two hits for WSU in the opener.
In the second game, the Raiders trailed 4-0 heading into the sixth as the Falcons scored single runs in the first and fourth and two in the second.
Wright State, however, was able to tie the game with one swing in the sixth. Gorman started the rally with a triple to right center and after Rapshus reached on an infield hit, Pfeffer walked to load the bases. That brought Mayle to the plate and the freshman first baseman tied it with her first collegiate home run, a grand slam to left center.
The Raiders tallied a run in the eighth on a RBI single by Boreing, only to see Bowling Green answer in the bottom of the inning with two runs to pull out the win.
Boreing finished with three hits in the second game while Mayle had two, including the grand slam.
Wright State (7-20) heads to the Windy City this weekend for a three-game Horizon League series at UIC, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 Eastern.
