Baseball Falls in HL Championship Game

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team was one out away from forcing a one-game, take-all championship final, only to see Youngstown State score two runs to pull out a 5-4 decision to win the Horizon League title Saturday afternoon at Kapco Park in Mequon, Wisconsin.

YSU opened the scoring with a run in the first before Jeff Limbaugh tied it in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run down the left field line, his first of the year.  The Raiders then went up 2-1 in the fourth as Sean Murphy singled up the middle, stole second, advanced to third on a John Brodner fly ball and scored as Joe Ford had a hit through the left side of the infield.

It stayed that way until Youngstown State tallied a pair of runs with two outs in the seventh to go up 3-2.

In the eighth, Wright State regained the lead with a pair of runs.  With two out and no one on base, Sean Murphy had an infield single and Brodner walked.  That brought Ford to the plate and his fly ball eluded the diving right fielder for a triple to drive in both Murphy and Brodner and make it 4-3.

The Penguins loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Raider reliever Joey Hoelzel induced an infieild pop up for the second out.  Alex Larivee, however, singled through the left side to tie the game and the eventual winning scored as Brent Gillespie was hit by a pitch..

Jack Van Horn, making his first-ever career start for WSU, allowed just one run in five innings while offensively, Ford finished with three hits and three RBI and Andrew McCafferty and Sean Murphy had two hits each.

Limbaugh was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Andrew Elliott, who struck out 13 in 6.2 innings of relief earlier in the day against Milwaukee.

Wright State closes out the season with a final mark of 35-22.
