Men's Soccer Wins 3-2 Thriller Over Grand Canyon

Box Score

Down a goal most of the second half, a Peguy Ngatcha goal forced overtime and a goal by Jake Stovall with 4:12 remaining in the second overtime gave the Wright State men's soccer team a thrilling 3-2 decision over Grand Canyon Sunday night in Phoenix, Arizona.

Grand Canyon scored first with a goal at the 23:21 mark of the first half, only to see the Raiders tie it six minutes later.  Sophomore forward Eric Lynch started the tying play with a free kick near midfield and sophomore forward Austin Seifert followed with a header over the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

The Antelopes, however, took a 2-1 lead into halftime on a goal with just 1:09 remaining in the period and it stayed that way for the first 33 minutes of the second half.

At the 78:44 mark, though, WSU came up with the equalizer as sophomore Peguy Ngatcha recorded his second goal of the year.  Ngatcha's first shot was blocked, but he connected on his second opportunity on a bounce back.

The match remained deadlocked through the rest of regulation and the first overtime period before Wright State tallied the game-winner at the 105:48 mark of the second overtime.  Lynch again started the play with a pass to senior defender Emeka Ononye on the left side, who headed the ball across the goal face to sophomore forward Jake Stovall, who headed it from close range on the right side of the net.

It was the third goal of the season for Stovall, the second assist of the night and fourth of the year for Lynch and the first assist of the season for Ononye.

The Raiders led 8-5 in corner kick while Grand Canyon had a 22-17 edge on shots.  Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer finished with five saves.

Wright State (4-1-1) returns home to host Duquese at Alumni Field on Friday, September 19, at 8:00.  That contest will be the second of a doubleheader as the WSU women's team takes on Tennessee Tech at 5:00.
