Cain Gives Men's Soccer 1-0 Victory Over Duquesne

Box Score

After a scoreless two halves of regulation, Wes Cain provided the game-winner as his goal with 3:33 remaining in the first overtime lifted the Wright State men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Duquesne Friday night at Alumni Field.

Both teams had opportunites throughout regulation, with the Raiders attempting 15 shots, including six on goal, while the Dukes had 13 shots overall, six as well on goal.

Cain, though, made WSU's only attempt in overtime the game-winner as the junior midfielder  connected on a shot for his first goal of the season.  Sophomore forward Eric Lynch was credited with his fifth assist of the year.

"It was fitting that it ended like it did," said WSU head coach Bryan Davis.  "Wes had a similar situation at San Diego State last week, but he missed the ball on a breakaway.  For him to get that moment again and scoring a goal says a lot about him and the team coming along and getting better.  Different guys have come through on different days and tonight it was Wes."

Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer posted the shutout, his third of the season, as he recorded five saves.

"it was definitely a team win," said Davis.  "We had guys like Avery Ball that came in off the bench and did a good job."

Wright State (5-1-1), which is off to its best start through seven matches since going 6-1 in 2003, hits the road for two matches next week, taking on Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, September 23, at 7:00 before opening Horizon League play on Saturday, September 27, with a 1:00 contest at Detroit.
