Box Score The Wright State men's soccer team claimed the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic title Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton in Columbus.
The Raiders and the Titans were scoreless at half, but WSU broke through first as junior Peguy Ngatcha picked up his second goal of the season from freshman Jackson Dietrich at the 48:00 minute mark. It was Dietrich's third assist on the season. It wasn't long before the Raiders went up 2-0 as junior Jake Stovall headed in a corner kick from junior Sam DeRoy at 49:45.
"This weekend posed some great challenges to our guys," WSU head coach Bryan Davis said. "Today's challenge was playing a very good and nationally-recognized Cal State Fullerton. We expected a great game and got one."
"Our guys played well today," added Davis. "For a good portion of the game, we executed quite well. Like every college game, if you let the other team stay close or smell opportunity, the end of the game can be wild. Today's certainly was that. However, we couldn't ask for better preparation for our young group to learn how to close out games. I'm hopefull we don't concede a penalty kick next time to learn this lesson, but we found a way and we move on."
Fullerton, which played in last year's NCAA Tournament, got on the board by a penalty kick at 75:04 from Robert Coronado. The Raiders posted 12 shots with six on goal while the Titans has 10 shots with three on goal.
The win gives WSU its first tournament title since taking the Dayton Marriott Classic crown in 2010 with victories over and Western Michigan and IPFW.
Named to the All-Tournament Team from WSU were Eric Lynch, Jackson Dietrich, Tyler Blackmer and Peguy Ngatcha.
Wright State (2-0) returns to action on Friday, September 4, at Kentucky. Game time is 5 pm.
