The Wright State baseball team scored nine runs in the middle three innings in rolling to a 12-1 Horizon League win over Northern Kentucky in the series opener Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.

WSU opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second as JD Orr's infield single drove in Brad Macciocchi and an error on the play plated Matt Morrow, only to see the Norse cut the deficit in half with a run in the third.

It stayed that way until the Raiders tallied four runs in the fourth. With one out, Orr had a hit to right and after Mitch Roman drew a walk, Ryan Fucci singled in Orr to make it 3-1. An error loaded the bases for Gabe Snyder, who knocked in a run with a grounder and Jason DeFevers followed with a hit to left to drive in two more.

Another Fucci RBI single and a three-run home run by Daniel Arthur, his fourth of the year, extended the margin to 10-1 in the sixth and Wright State scored its final two runs on a Orr RBI single in the sixth and a Kevin Whatley walk with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Jesse Scholtens (4-0) went seven innings for the win, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Evan Moores threw two scoreless innings in his collegiate debut, fanning two.

Offensively, Orr finished a perfect six-for-six with two RBI and two runs scored while Fucci had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored and Macciocchi also had three hits.

Wright State (17-8, 6-1 Horizon) and Northern Kentucky (9-17, 0-7 Horizon) will play the second game of the series Saturday morning at 11:00.
