@WSURaiderGang Offense Catches Fire in Series Sweep

Wright State (25-11, 10-5) used two impressive offense performances on Saturday to win both games in the doubleheader and to sweep the series against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 16-4 and 11-3. The Raiders tallied 14 runs in game one and 11 in the series finale, which included four home runs. Zane Collins picked up his Horizon League-best sixth win of the season and Bradley Brehmer improved his perfect record to 5-0.

Scoring Summary

Game 1

1st Inning
The Grizzlies struck first with back-to-back walks to begin the game which both scored to give Oakland an early 2-0 lead. Wright State quickly responded with a JD Orr lead off single and a walk to Damon Dues. Orr stole second and then third to break the all-time Wright State regular season stolen base record with 37, breaking teammate Zach Weatherford's record set in 2017. Peyton Burdick also drew a walk and Wright State threatened with the bases loaded and no outs. Seth Gray then entered and took four straight balls for an RBI walk. Damon Dues came around to score to tie the game on a play where Oakland recorded all three outs of the inning.

2nd Inning
Zane Collins put together a perfect inning and the Raider offense went back to work in the bottom of the second. Chase Slone and Alex Alders reached via the walk and Brandon Giltrow sent a double off the wall in left center to score both runners. Wright State loaded the bases with two more walks and Peyton Burdick scored the fifth Raider run on a deep sac fly to center field. Gray continued the big inning for Wright State by lining a double down the right field line to score two more runs. Oakland finally escaped the inning after a pitching change, but not before the Raiders claimed six runs and took a big 8-2 lead.

3rd Inning
The offense kept rolling for Wright State in the next inning. Brandon Giltrow recorded his third RBI in the game allowing Alex Alders to score. JD Orr followed with a double to left and scored after Damon Dues lined a ball into right.

5th Inning
Alex Alders began the bottom of the fifth with a double down the left line. Brandon Giltrow stepped into the box and crushed a ball to center to drive in Alders for his fourth RBI of the afternoon and seventh of the series. JD Orr sent a ball to deep right center and coasted in to third for an RBI triple. Wright State claimed their third run of the frame on a sac fly to center from Peyton Burdick.

7th Inning
Mitch Gremling took over on the mound for Wright State and dealt a scoreless inning in the sixth and returned for a three-up, three-down inning in the seventh. After an error, Wright State put runners on second and third for Gehrig Anglin who pounded a double into the left center gap to drive home both runners. Weatherford followed with a double to score Anglin and Wright State took a 16-4 lead.

8th Inning
Wes Earles recorded a doubleplay to end a scoreless eighth and fanned three straight Oakland hitters to wrap up a dominating performance from Wright State.

Game 2

1st Inning
For the second straight game, Oakland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. And, just like game one, Wright State quickly erased that lead. Damon Dues sent a ball screaming down the left field line for a double and Burdick connected for a single to put runners at the corners with one out for Seth Gray. Gray singled up the middle to put the Raiders on the board and advanced to second on the play. Zach Weatherford followed with an RBI groundout at third to tie the game.

4th  Inning
Both starters traded a pair of scoreless innings until Oakland scratched across the lead run on a passed ball. Wright State responded by putting two runners on base via a hit batter and a walk for Chase Slone, who ripped an RBI single to right. With runners on first and third and one out, Giltrow lined a single to left to score Tyler Black and to give Wright State a 4-3 lead.

7th Inning
Wright State added insurance to their lead with a big inning in the home half of the seventh. JD Orr drew a walk and advanced to third after a pickoff attempt sailed over the head of the first basemen. Then, Peyton Burdick launched a home run to left center, driving in two runs after an emphatic bat flip. Zach Weatherford followed with a double and Alex Alders mashed a home run to left to increase the Raider lead to 9-3.

8th Inning
Damon Dues crushed a ball which hit the scoreboard, and Seth Gray followed with the fourth Wright State long ball of the game. After two scoreless innings by Tristan Haught, Jake Schrand recorded the final three outs to clinch the series sweep for the Raiders.

Coach Alex Sogard was impressed with his team over the weekend. "Anytime you get a sweep it is a good weekend. We are continuing to grow and improve every weekend. I think our pitchers did a great job this weekend setting the tone, being aggressive in the strike zone and we took care of the ball on defense. Offensively, we did a really good job of having competitive at bats 1-9.

The Raiders will take their four-game win streak on the road at Milwaukee for a weekend Horizon League series.
