Raidergang set for second series with Youngstown State this weekend

THE SERIES
Teams: Wright State (12-5, 12-0 HL)
        Youngstown State (8-11, 3-5 HL)
Location: Eastwood Field / Nile, OH
The Wright State baseball team heads back out on the road for the second weekend in a row as the Raiders travel to take on Youngstown State in the second four-game Horizon League series of the season between the teams.Wright State is coming off of a four-win series at UIC and has won 12 in a row to begin HL play, while Youngstown State took all three games in a non-conference series against St. Bonaventure last weekend. The series gets started with a 5 p.m. first pitch on Friday, followed by a Saturday doubleheader with game one starting at 1 p.m. with game two to follow. The series wraps up with a 1 p.m. Sunday finale.
For Horizon League doubleheaders throughout the season, the first game will be a 7 inning game with the second game being a 9 inning game. If game one of the doubleheader goes extra innings then game two becomes a 7 inning game.
Fans can follow the action with live stats each game. All links are available on the team's schedule page. Youngstown State is safely allowing a maximum of 900 fans in attendance for each of the Penguins' home baseball games this spring at Eastwood Field. Tickets will be available at the gate, which will open approximately one hour prior to first pitch. Fans are advised that masks are mandatory and social distancing is required while in attendance at Eastwood Field.

Wright State tallied its third straight four-game weekend sweep at UIC. The Raider offense turned in a pair of 12-run wins as part of the sweep, outscoring the Flames 38-14 and connecting on 17 extra-base hits to UIC's four. On the mound, Wright State held UIC to 14 total runs (10 earned) over the 34 innings, a 2.65 staff ERA. Starters Jake Schrand and Austin Cline each struck out 10 batters over six innings to help lead to the weekend sweep, while all told, Wright State finished the weekend series raking up 42 strikeouts.

Youngstown State is 8-11 overall and 3-5 in Horizon League play after three non-conference wins over St. Bonaventure at home last weekend. It was Youngstown State's first series sweep since winning three straight games over UIC at Eastwood Field on March 30-31, 2018. Youngstown State had a player earn weekly Horizon League honors in each of the first three weeks of the season and was picked third in the 2021 Horizon League Baseball Preseason Poll. Wright State edged out UIC as the preseason favorite in a vote of the league's head coaches. The Penguins were also picked to finish third in the conference by D1Baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Wright State has won 12 straight games - the second longest active streak in the country behind Navy, who has won 19 straight dating back to last season. The Midshipmen are 4-0 (all home wins) this season but have not played since Feb. 27 due to COVID issues. Offensively, Tyler Black leads the Horizon League in several categories, including with his .410 batting average, 25 hits, .803 slugging percentage, .526 on-base percentage, six home runs and 22 RBI. On the mound, Jake Schrand and Austin Cline are tied for the HL strikeout lead with 44 punch outs each. Schrand ranks third in the HL with 29 innings pitched while Cline ranks third in the League with his 1.98 ERA.
HAMILTON NAMED HL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Quincy Hamilton was named the Horizon League Batter of the Week on March 23 after he collected nine RBI over the weekend off a trio of three-RBI games as he helped lead the Raiders to a sweep at UIC. Hamilton connected on two more homers this weekend, his second Horizon League weekend with multiple homers, and he has now hit a long ball in six of 12 Horizon League contests. Overall, Hamilton hit .375 for the series (6-for-16), adding a triple to his two homers for three extra-base hits for a .875 slugging percentage, while driving in the nine RBIs. He also scored five times and finished with a team-high 14 total bases after drawing three walks and being hit by a pitch as well.
