Raiders take series opener behind early offense, Schrand's 12 strikeouts

The Wright State baseball team continued its winning ways with a 9-1 Friday road victory to open the four-game Horizon League series against HL newcomer Purdue Fort Wayne.

The Raiders (19-10, 18-3 HL) and Mastodons (9-22, 6-15 HL) continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m. at World Baseball Academy in Fort Wayne.

Wright State scored three runs in the opening two innings on Friday afternoon and never looked back, with starter Jake Schrand keeping Fort Wayne at bay with 12 strikeouts over his six innings of work. Schrand scattered seven hits over his start while walking two before Tristan Haught (two innings) and Jay Luikart wrapped up the final three innings on the mound.

Sammy Sass doubled to left center field to plate Tyler Black with the first run of the afternoon in the top of the first before the Raiders added two more runs in the second thanks to Alec Sayre's solo homer and a Damon Dues RBI single. Sass was again in the mix in the fifth inning, this time with an RBI triple to score Quincy Hamilton.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, Fort Wayne pitcher Gerald Pintarich balked in Konner Piotto, but the Raiders were unable to add any more runs in the frame, instead settling for three runs in the eighth via Piotto's RBI single and a Hamilton single that plated two more runs.

After Fort Wayne tallied its only score of the afternoon with an unearned run in the eighth, Piotto put the final stamp on the win with his second RBI of the game in the top of the ninth, grounding out but plating Sass in the process.

Five Raiders all finished with two hits each, including a double and triple from Sass and a double and home run from Sayre. Hamilton, Sass and Piotto each had two RBI, while Alex Alders had the only three-hit game of the afternoon with a double and a pair of runs scored.

Pintarich took the loss for Fort Wayne, allowing six Wright State runs and 12 hits over seven innings of work, while the Mastodon offense finished with eight hits, including two each from Trenton Stoner, Alex Evenson and Robert Young III.
