The Wright State baseball team used a trio of multi-run innings on Saturday afternoon on the way to a 9-2 victory in the second game of its weekend series with Charleston at Nischwitz Stadium.
Â
The Raiders (31-11) and Charleston (31-10, NCAA Division II) added this weekend's series as the remainder of the Horizon League finishes the regular season this weekend. Charleston awaits hosting duties as one of the upcoming NCAA Division II regional hosts. The series wraps up with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Wright State jumped ahead on the scoreboard with
Justin McConnell's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to plate
Zane Harris, but Charleston responded with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, tallying back-to-back singles to open the frame. The first run scored on a Bryce Toussaint RBI double before a Raider wild pitch plated the second runner. The Raiders bounced back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good with the help of three unearned runs.
Â
After Harris walked to open the inning, Wright State later had the bases loaded with one out when Harris scored on a wild pitch and then moments later
Quincy Hamilton drew a walk as ball four went to the backstop, allowing
Alex Alders to score on the second wild pitch.
Tyler Black's RBI single down the left field line plated McConnell for the third and final unearned run of the inning.
Â
The Raiders went on to add a single run in the sixth on a Hamilton RBI single to plate Dues, then a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, McConnell brought in
Jay Luikart with a sacrifice fly before Dues' RBI single through the left side brought home Alders. The eighth inning saw
Konner Piotto plate
Alec Sayre with a sacrifice fly of his own before Luikart scored later in the inning on a McConnell fielder's choice ground ball to give the afternoon its final score.
Â
Wright State finished with 10 hits in the win, with three from Black and a pair from Dues in the leadoff spot. McConnell drove in three runs of the course of the afternoon. Reliever
Alex Theis was credited with the win as the first Raider pitcher out of the bullpen, while starter
Bradley Brehmer allowed just one hit with two walks over three innings and 38 pitches.
Mitch Gremling and
Bradley Deboutte each struck out three batters in two innings of relief before a clean inning from
Riley Perlich to wrap up the game.
Â
Charleston's Colt Webb took the loss after allowing three unearned runs in one inning of relief, while starter Austin Henrich allowed one hit with a pair of walks over the first three innings. Offensively, Charleston had five hits from five different players, with Bryce Toussaint's double the only extra-base hit for the visitors.
