Baseball extends win streak to seven with Sunday sweep over Oakland

DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program extended its win streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep over Oakland on Sunday at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders earned a 9-1 victory in game one, followed by a 13-0 shutout performance in game two.
WSU (13-10, 5-1 HL) held the Golden Grizzlies (8-13, 2-4 HL) to just one run on 11 hits over the two games and will conclude its home stretch on Wednesday, March 29, versus Xavier at home.
Game 1 - Wright State 9, Oakland 1
Wright State had 13 hits and a standout start from Sebastian Gongora en route to a 9-1 win in game one.
Gongora improved to 3-1 on the season as he held Oakland scoreless on five hits and four walks in a season-high eight innings of work. The 6-foot-5 lefty finished with seven strikeouts, highlighted by three in a row in the top of the first inning.
Joey Valentine was tagged for one run on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, while Garret Simpson recorded the final out to seal the victory.
Gehrig Anglin and Patrick Fultz finished with three-hit performances to pace WSU's efforts offensively. Andrew Patrick had a team-high three runs batted in on a homer and a sacrifice fly. Luke Arnold, Boston Smith, and Dane Thomas contributed with RBI singles.
WSU featured an aggressive approach with four stolen bases, led by Anglin with two. Sass added two walks in the win.
The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Patrick drove Fultz home on a sacrifice fly.
Wright State plated four runs on four hits and two errors by Oakland in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Arnold and Thomas recorded back-to-back RBI singles. The pair came around to score on a fielding error by the Golden Grizzly second baseman.
WSU built its advantage to 9-0 with a four-run eighth inning, tallying three hits and two walks in the frame. Patrick started the scoring with a two-run homer, the second in his last three games. Smith recorded an RBI single, while Fultz drove in a run on an RBI groundout.
Game 2 - Wright State 13, Oakland 0
The Wright State pitching staff fired a five-hit shutout in game two to secure their first three-game sweep of the 2023 season.
Starting pitcher Luke Stofel (1-2) was credited with the winning decision after allowing no runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six batters in five innings of work. Alex Theis, Josh Laisure, Ty Roder, and Garrett Peters each tossed a scoreless inning in relief, combining for seven strikeouts.
The Raider offense finished with nine hits and ten walks. Andrew Patrick had two RBI singles and two runs scored, while Julian Greenwell batted 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and two runs. Jay Luikart and Patrick Fultz tallied two-run singles for their lone hits of the game. Carson Clark drove in two runs on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. Dane Thomas scored a team-leading four times in addition to an RBI single.
WSU also took advantage of three Oakland errors, which led to seven unearned runs given up by the Golden Grizzlies. Meanwhile, the Raiders were errorless defensively for the second game in a row.
