Raiders defeat Cincinnati 7-6 in first round of Joe Nuxhall Classic

OXFORD, Ohio — The Wright State baseball program rallied back for a 7-6 victory over Cincinnati in the opening round of the Joe Nuxhall Classic on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Park.
The Raiders improved to 16-12 on the season and will continue their 2023 campaign on Thursday, April 6, at Milwaukee.
Sammy Sass paced the Wright State offense by going 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and a run scored. Luke Arnold batted 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a walk, while Andrew Patrick tallied a team-leading three hits and two runs. Ben Stoner and Jay Luikart notched RBI singles for their lone hits of the day.
Starting pitcher Josh Laisure struck out a career-high seven batters while allowing two runs in four innings of work. The sophomore right-hander retired his first nine batters faced, recording five punch outs in the span. Tristan Haught (2-1) allowed one run in relief but collected the winning decision. Joey Valentine earned his third save of the season, as he held Cincinnati (12-18) scoreless on two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of action.
The Raiders reached the scoreboard first in the non-conference contest, as Boston Smith roped a one-out double in the bottom of the second and came around to score on an RBI single by Stoner.
Laisure struck out the side in the top of the third inning but was tagged for two runs on three hits and a walk in the top of the fourth. The Bearcats increased their edge to 3-1 in the following frame with a sacrifice fly.
Avery Fisher and Patrick had back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the fifth and advanced a base following a groundout by Patrick Fultz. Sass then scored the pair on a two-out, two-run single to left center, tying the game at 3-all.
Cincinnati broke the tie with sacrifice flies atop the sixth and seventh frames to go up 5-3. The Raiders stormed back with a four-spot in the bottom half of the seventh to take a 7-5 advantage. Sass, Luikart, and Arnold recorded RBI singles in the rally. An additional run scored on Luikart's single, as the right fielder committed a fielding error, leading to Sass scoring from first.
The Bearcats closed their deficit to 7-6 in the top of the eighth but went down in order in the ninth to seal the Raider win.
