Volleyball heads across town for weekend tourney action

DAYTON — The Wright State volleyball team doesn't have to travel far for weekend action as the Raiders will stay in town for three matches at Dayton Flyer Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Raiders take on Illinois State Friday afternoon before Saturday matchups with UC Santa Barbara and host Dayton. The match against Dayton can be seen on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State finished 2-1 last weekend as hosts of the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek Invitational falling in four sets to No. 7 Pitt before wins over Ohio State and Ohio. For the weekend, the Raiders hit .222 as a group with a 13.17 kills per set average, led by Mya Ayro's 56 kills (4.67 kills/set) and 36 kills from Katie Sowko (3.00 kills/set) as Lauren Yacobucci passed out a 10.25 assists per set average over the 12 sets and defensively the Raiders averaged 15.42 digs per set and 2.42 blocks per set as a group.

MYA'S HORIZON
Mya Ayro was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on Monday for the second straight week, this time after totaling 56 kills at the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek Invitational. Ayro turned in 17 kills Friday night against No. 7 Pitt before finishing with a match-best 25 kills on Saturday and 14 kills to lead all players in Sunday's sweep over Ohio. For the weekend, Ayro averaged 4.67 kills per set and hit .300 while adding 10 blocks, eight digs and four service aces over 12 sets.

ATTENDANCE BREAKERS
Wright State reset its single game attendance record in back-to-back contests in the Tru by Hilton Beavercreek Invitational first with 1,239 fans on Friday night against No. 7 Pitt before the Raiders knocked off Ohio State in front of 1,858 fans.

POWER-FUL WINS
With the win over Ohio State on September 13, Wright State has now won four its last six matches against Power conference opponents with wins over Cal and Ohio State this season to go along with 2024 victories against Ohio State and Miami (FL). The Raiders' two losses in the last two years have been to a pair of Top 10 foes in No. 1 Nebraska and No. 7 Pitt.

KNOW THE FOES
- Illinois State has started the season 4-5 overall but dropped three matches last weekend at home to Miami (FL), Cincinnati and Illinois. Illinois State finished 17-16 overall with an 11-7 Missouri Valley record a season ago.
- UC Santa Barbara has opened the year 6-3 but is coming off a Tuesday loss to Pepperdine that snapped a four-match winning streak. UC Santa Barbara recorded a 14-16 overall record with a 10-8 mark in the Big West in 2024.
- Dayton enters the weekend 3-5 on the young season, coming off a weekend with three losses in Minnesota. The 2024 season saw the Dayton finish at 31-3 overall as champions of the A-10 as the Flyers advanced to the NCAA regionals before falling at Nebraska.

LEADING THE PACK
Wright State is led offensively by Mya Ayro and Katie Sowko. Syro leads the Raiders with 142 kills and a 4.30 kills per set average while Sowko follows her with 97 kills and a 3.52 kills per set average. Lauren Yacobucci has passed out 301 assists and has a current 9.12 assists per set average.

KATIE KATIE
Katie Sowko has five double-doubles in eight matches to date this season, including turning in a 19 kill, 18 dig effort against Ohio State on Sept. 13. Sowko had a career-high 22 kills as part of a double-double against Loyola Chicago (Aug. 30).

SATURDAY DÉJÀ VU
Wright State won matches against a Power conference opponent on back-to-back Saturdays, first when the Raiders grabbed a reverse sweep over Cal out of the ACC on Sept. 6 before following that up with a five-set victory over Ohio State on Sept. 13. The Raiders are 3-0 in Saturday matches entering the weekend after also tallying a Saturday win over Loyola Chicago on Aug. 30.
