Box Score The Wright State women's basketball team shot 58 percent in its home opener Monday night at the Nutter Center, but could not overcome 28 turnovers as the Ball State Cardinals closed the game with a 22-9 run to pull out a 61-52 decision.
The Raiders came out smoking, hitting nine of their first 11 shots, three by Sierra Crayton and two each from Erica Richardson and Shey Peddy, to go up 19-9 with 10:52 remaining in the first half.
Ball State, though, started on a 24-8 run from there, taking the lead at 24-23 on a Kyleight Jones layup at the 3:55 mark and going up 33-27 at the break thanks to threes from Audrey McDonald and Emily Maggert and a three-point play by Lisa Rusche.
A Porchia Green layup opened the second half scoring for the Cardinals, but Wright State answered with a 16-4 run, capped off by a Kanisha Ward three and a Peddy fast-break layup, to go back in front 43-39 with 14:09 remaining.
Back came Ball State with an 11-2 burst, including two Shannon Klei threes, giving the Cardinals a 50-45 advantage and despite WSU cutting the deficit to 52-50 on a Peddy three with 5:15 left, BSU held on for the win by holding the Raiders to just two points the rest of the way.
Wright State hit 21 of 36 shots for the game for 58 percent, including 12 of 19 for 63 percent in the first half, while Ball State shot 44 percent for the contest.
The difference, though, came in turnovers as the Cardinals forced 28 while committing just 17, resulting in a 28-14 margin in points off of turnovers. Ball State also hit 17 of 25 from the foul line, including nine of 14 in the second half, to only six of 11 overall for Wright State.
Crayton led all scorers with 14 points for Wright State while Ward had 13 and Peddy 12 along with five rebounds and four assists. Danielle Duncan chipped in six points, six boards and three assists and Richardson had six points and four rebounds.
Rusche paced Ball State (1-1) with 11 points and six steals while Kiley Jarrett had 10 points and five assists and Maggert 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Wright State, now 0-2 on the season, faces another Mid-American Conference opponent on the road Saturday as the Raiders take on Eastern Michigan starting at 2:00.
