Box Score The Wright State women's basketball team had a double-double effort from Brittney Whiteside, but it wasn't enough as the Butler Bulldogs drained 12 three-pointers in defeating the Raiders 68-56 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Saturday night.
WSU never led in the contest as Butler scored the first six points on threes by Susan Lester and Jackie Closser. The Raiders drew to within one at 13-12 at the 12:32 mark following a Sierra Crayton foul shot, but the Bulldogs extended the margin back out to seven on back-to-back Closser threes.
Wright State again came within one at 24-23 with 7:07 remaining in the first half on two Steph Comisar foul shots, only to see Butler again build back the advantage as the Bulldogs outscored the Raiders 15-6 the rest of the way to lead 39-29 at the break.
Once again the Raiders cut the deficit to two at 42-40 with 13:57 left to play on another Comisar foul shot, but again the Bulldogs had an answer as they scored seven straight points, capped off by another Closser three. Butler later put the game out of reach with a 9-0 run, which included threes from Susan Lester and Closser.
The shooting percentage were nearly similar as Butler shot 39 percent compared to 37 percent for Wright State, but the Bulldogs were 12 of 26 from behind the arc to just three of 18 for the Raiders. WSU had a slight 39-37 rebounding edge and committed only 13 turnovers, but Butler made the most of them as they had a 24-9 differential in points off of turnovers.
Whiteside posted a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds for Wright State and Whitney Lewis added 13 points and eight boards, but no other Raider managed more than six.
Closser was the only player in double figures for Butler (9-12, 6-3 Horizon) as she ended up with 28 points, including a sizzling seven of nine from three-point range, and added six assists. Lester and Candace Jones chipped in eight.
Wright State, now 5-15 overall and 3-6 in the Horizon League, continues the three-game road swing next week with a visit to the Windy City, starting with a rare Thursday afternoon matinee at UIC. Game time is 12:30 Eastern.
