Box Score The Wright State women's basketball team clinched the fifth seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament Thursday night as the Raiders held off a Cleveland State rally in the second half to defeat the Vikings 63-55 Thursday night at the Nutter Center.
Kailey Klein opened the scoring with two free throws, but that turned out to be the only CSU lead of the night as Tyanda Hammock's three started a 14-3 Raider run, which also included another Hammock triple and ones from Whitney Lewis and Kanisha Ward.
After Cleveland State closed the gap to 19-14 on a Stephanie Crosley layup with 3:47 remaining in the first half, Wright State scored the final six points of the period, four of those coming from Brittney Whiteside.
While WSU shot 36 percent over the first 20 minutes, Cleveland State struggled as the Vikings made only four of 28 shots for 14 percent.
A Hammock layup gave Wright State its biggest lead of the night at 34-20 with 14:53 left and the Raiders were still up 12 on an Erica Richardson basket two minutes later, but Cleveland State followed with a 10-1 run, half by Klein, to only trail 39-36 at the 10 minute mark.
The Vikings later drew to within one at 44-43 after a Jessica Roque three with 7:06 to play, but Hammock converted a three-point play to keep Wright State in the lead and threes from Ward and Steph Comisar extended the Raider lead to 54-47.
A three-point play by Chenara Wilson trimmed the advantage to four, but the Vikings would get no closer as WSU put the game out of reach by scoring nine of the next 11 points over the final minutes.
The shooting percentages for both teams improved dramatically in the second half as Wright State shot 63 percent to finish at 47 percent overall while Cleveland State hit for 52 percent to end the night at 33 percent.
The Vikings held a 36-31 rebounding advantage and led 14-0 in second-chance points, but the Raiders countered with a 29-12 differential in points off of turnovers.
Three WSU players scored in double figures as Comisar led the way with 12 while Lewis and Hammock each had 11. Whiteside added nine points and five assists and Ward chipped in eight points off the bench.
Klein led all scorers with 18 for Cleveland State (8-20, 5-10 Horizon) while Wilson had nine and Nicole Thomas eight.
With the win, Wright State (9-17, 7-8 Horizon) clinched the fifth seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament and already knows the opponent for the quarterfinals as the Raiders will take on Milwaukee on Wednesday, March 7, at the Klotsche Center.
Between now and then, however, WSU wraps up the regular season on Saturday, March 3, by hosting Youngstown State for a 1:00 contest. Wright State's three seniors--Comisar, Hammock and Whiteside--will be recognized before the game.
