Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team split a pair of Horizon League contests with Cleveland State on Friday, dropping game one 7-2 and winning the nightcap 11-10. Jeremy Hamilton ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning that pushed the winning run across the plate in game two.
In game one, Cleveland State took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. The Raiders added a pair of runs in their half of the third, when Justin Parker singled to drive in a pair of runs.
The Vikings added a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 4-2 and capped their scoring with three runs in the top of the ninth.
Holleran threw 8 1/3 innings in his fifth start of the season, allowing seven runs on 13 hits. Holleran struck out seven Viking batters and walked two, as only six of his runs given up were earned.
Offensively, Parker paced the Green and Gold with a single and a pair of RBI's in the contest. Jeremy Hamilton each collected two hits for the Raiders in game one.
In game two, the Raiders jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as they plated four runs on four hits. Dan Biedenharn
Jeremy Hamilton then drove in his 18th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Brian Shoup then drove in a pair of runs with a double and Stephen Marquez's RBI single made the score 4-0.
The Vikings answered with five runs of their own in the second inning as they collected five hits and capitalized on a Raider error to take a 5-4 lead.
The Green and Gold evened the game in their half of the second inning when John Kopilchack doubled to left-center field to start the inning. Kopilchack moved to third on a sacrifice by Ross Oeder and scored on a wild pitch.
The two teams sat through a one-hour and twelve minute rain delay between the top and bottom of the third inning, ending the night for WSU starter Erich Schanz. The senior threw three innings and allowed six runs, only four earned, and struck out five.
Wright State took the lead with two runs in the third inning. The Raiders used RBI singles from Nick Allsop and Oeder to take a 7-6 lead. The Green and Gold added another run in the fifth on an RBI from Aaron Fields, to lead 8-6.
CSU added a run in the seventh to cut into the Raider lead, but WSU added two in their half of the inning and pushed their lead to 10-7.
The Vikings charged back with three runs in the eighth inning off of WSU reliever Nate Stevens. CSU collected three hits and one batter was hit by a pitch before Jason Bennion came on to record the final out of the inning with the game tied at 10-10.
Stevens threw 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
In the ninth, the Raiders began their rally with a double by Fields, an intentional walk to Kopilchack and an intentional walk Biedenharn to load the bases with one out. After a pitching change, CSU brought five infielders into the game and Hamilton stepped to the plate. With a 2-0 count, Hamilton ripped a single between the third baseman and shortstop to score Fields from third and give WSU an 11-10 victory.
Bennion threw the final 1 1/3 innings scoreless and picked up his fist win of the season. The senior lefty is now 1-0 on the season and has recorded two saves.
The Green and Gold were led by Field who posted three hits in the second game and six other Raiders collected two hits. Six players doubled in the game and Oeder, Hamilton and Shoup all drove in a pair of RBI's in the nightcap.
The Raiders and Vikings will square off in the rubber game of the series on Sunday, March 25, at 1:00.
