Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team extended their winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of league foe Butler. The Green and Gold took game one 4-1 behind a brilliant pitching performance from Garret Holleran and slugged their way to a 12-8 victory in the nightcap.
The Raiders jumped on top early in game one, scoring a pair of runs off of BU starter Bryan Bokowy in the first inning. Dan Biedenharn got things started with a walk and Justin Parker doubled to score him from first. Parker later scored on a fielding error by the Bulldogs right fielder to make the score 2-0 in favor of WSU.
The Raiders added a single run in the sixth inning, when Parker again doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball.
The Bulldogs scored in the seventh inning to cut into the Raiders lead, but WSU would add a run of their own in the seventh on an RBI single by Dan Biedenharn. That proved to be all that was needed, making the margin 4-1.
Holleran threw seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits to pick up his third victory of the season. Holleran struck out five batters and issued no walks to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Scott Ruthven relieved Holleran, throwing 1.2 innings and issuing only two walks. Jason Bennion came on in the ninth inning and recorded the final out with two runners on base to record his fifth save of the 2007 season.
Offensively, the Green and Gold collected eight hits and two players recorded RBI's. Oeder paced the offense with three hits and a run scored, while Parker posted two hits and scored twice. Parker and Biedenharn each collected RBI's in the contest.
In game two, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on WSU starter John Lambert. Butler benefited from two walks, collected one hit and used a Raider error to post three runs, only one earned, in the second inning.
The Raiders used a home run to get on the board in their half of the second inning, as Gerald Ogrinc sent a ball sailing over the left field fence. Ogrinc sent the Jeff Sinkiewicz offering 381 feet for his first career homer to cut the lead BU lead to 3-1.
Lambert walked the leadoff batter of the third inning, but struck out the next three batters to end the inning. The Raiders then stormed back to take the lead in their half of the inning. Stephen Marquez's sacrifice fly put the Raiders ahead 5-3.
Lambert was relieved to start the fifth inning, leaving with the 5-3 lead, and picked up the first win of his collegiate career. Lambert threw four innings, leaving after reaching his predetermined pitch count, striking out five batters and allowing only one earned run.
The Raiders sent ten batters to the plate in the fifth inning and expanded their lead to 10-3. The Raiders used six hits, a sacrifice fly and capitalized on a Bulldog error in the inning.
A single run in the sixth and seventh inning pushed the Raiders lead to 12-3 over Butler. The Bulldogs (11-19, 4-9 HL) rallied with five runs in the final two innings to close the gap and account for the final margin of 12-8 in favor of WSU.
Hamilton was four-for-five with a double and a triple in the second game, driving in two RBI's and scoring once. Biedenharn, Oeder and Parker each posted two hits in the second game, with McGrew and Brian Shoup chipping in three hits apiece. Marquez and Ogrinc each drove in a pair of runs and five other Raiders posted an RBI's in the game.
The Raiders improve to 15-11 overall and 9-4 in league play and will now hit the road for a weekend series in Chicago against league frontrunner UIC. The series will kick off with a single game on Friday, April 13, starting at 7:05 Dayton time.
