
Baseball Splits High-Scoring Twinbill with Youngstown State

The Wright State baseball team pounded out 29 hits in their doubleheader with Youngstown State in Niles, Ohio. The Raiders took game one 11-6, but dropped the second game 9-8 in a tightly contested game.
The Raiders took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one on an RBI ground out from Dan Biedenharn double, before crossing the plate the Parker out.
YSU tallied a run of their own in the first inning off of WSU starter Kyle Kearcher, but WSU would add three in the second to take the lead for good.
The Green and Gold got things started in the second inning, scoring three runs with two outs. After Gerald Ogrinc singled and John Kopilchack walked, Oeder drove in the first run of the inning with a single and Biedenharn plated a pair of runs with double to left field.
Biedenharn added another RBI in the fourth inning to push the Wright State lead to 5-1. Then the Raiders added five runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to 10-1.
In the fifth inning, Shoup got things started with a single to center field, stole second and advanced to third on a YSU error. Stephen Marquez then brought Shoup in to score with a sacrifice fly. WSU then loaded the bases and Biedenharn added another RBI and Parker added a pair of RBI's. Biedenharn added the final run of the inning as he crossed the plate when Parker was caught in a run down between first and second.
A single run in the sixth inning capped the scoring in game one for Wright State. Shoup doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single from Kris Steffen.
YSU added three runs in the sixth inning and a pair of runs in the seventh inning to close the gap to 11-6, but would get no closer as Jason Bennion would close the door.
Kyle Kearcher started game one and threw 6.1 innings to pick up his sixth victory of the season. Kearcher allowed ten hits, walked one batter and struck out four in the contest. Kearcher is now 6-3 on the season and handed the ball to Jason Bennion who completed the game. Bennion threw the final 2.2 innings, allowed no hits, walked a batter and struck out two.
Offensively for the Green and Gold, Biedenharn, Oeder and Ogrinc each collected three hits and three other Raiders chipped in a pair of hits. Biedenharn drove in four RBI's and Parker added three in the first game.
In game two, WSU got the scoring started in the third inning when Kopilchack smacked a home run 375 feet over the right field fence.
The Penguins took their first lead of the weekend in their half of the third inning after loading the bases with no one out. Erich Diedrich drove in a pair of RBI's with a single to center field to start the scoring for YSU. Brent Parks then plated a run with a single through the right side and added another run on a sacrifice fly to center field. WSU starter Garret Holleran then loaded the bases and a run crossed the plate on a passed ball. Rayce Robinson then plated a run with a ground out to put YSU ahead 6-1.
The Raiders stormed back to tie the game in the fifth inning as they batted around. The inning got started with an Oeder single and stole base. Biedenharn then plated Oeder with a single and Hamilton smashed his fifth home run of the season to cut the YSU lead to 6-4. Parker then walked and later scored on a two-out triple from Aaron Fields. Ogrinc slapped a single through the left side to score Fields and knot the game at 6-6.
The Penguins added single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to build their lead to 8-6.
Ogrinc drove in another RBI in the seventh inning with a single and pulled WSU within one at 8-7.
The Penguins added a run in their half of the seventh inning and Wright State plated a run in the eighth to cap the scoring, making the final deficit 9-8.
Holleran threw seven innings and allowed 13 hits, nine runs (six earned), and struck out one batter. The senior falls to 3-3 overall this season in the loss.
In game two, Oeder and Hamilton each pounded out two hits, with Hamilton driving in three RBI's. Ogrinc drove in a pair of runs and posted two hits, while Biedenharn and Fields each scored a pair of runs.
The Raiders are now 20-14 overall and 13-7 in Horizon League play after the twinbill split with YSU. The Raiders and Penguins will take to the field for the final game of their series at 1:00 on Sunday, April 22, at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio.
