Steffen, Schanz Lead Baseball Past Cleveland State

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team posted their first 30-win season in five years with a 7-0 victory over Cleveland State on Friday night. The Raiders pounded out 12 hits and Erich Schanz struck out six in his first complete-game shutout as a Raider.

The Raiders didn't score in the first inning, as a runner was thrown out at home, but Jeremy Hamilton did tie a school record. The sophomore doubled to deep left field for his 22nd two-bagger of the season. Hamilton ties teammate and fellow sophomore Justin Parker for the single season mark.

The Raiders struck in the second inning with their first run of the contest to take a 1-0 lead. Brian Shoup led off the inning with a check-swing double to left field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kris Steffen. Gerald Ogrinc then grounded out to third base to push Shoup across the plate.

The Raiders added to their lead in the fifth inning as Ross Oeder singled with two outs in the inning to get things started. Oeder stole second and later scored on a failed pickoff attempt by CSU starter Stephen Procner to push WSU to a 2-0 lead.

Erich Schanz took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of the contest, but after retiring the first batter he surrendered the first hit. Wallace Richardson dropped a fly ball between the second baseman and the right fielder for the first CSU hit of the game. After a hit batter, Schanz coaxed a fly ball to right field to end the inning.

The Green and Gold added to their lead in the sixth inning as Parker led the inning off with a single up the middle. Shoup then dropped down the sacrifice bunt, allowing Parker to move to third, and Steffen drove in the RBI with a sacrifice fly to left-center field.

With the lead at 3-0, the Raiders tacked on a run off of CSU relief pitcher Pat McKitrick via a solo home run by Steffen. It was the first career home run for Steffen and was his second RBI in the contest. Ogrinc reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a balk and was sacrificed to third by Sam Mote to put a runner on third and one out. John Kopilchack walked, putting runners on the corners, and Oeder hit a sacrifice fly to push WSU ahead 5-0.

The Raiders added a pair of runs in the ninth inning on RBI's from Shoup and Steffen to account for the final margin of 7-0.

Schanz threw his first complete game of the season and held CSU to four hits in nine innings. The right-hander allowed three singles, a double, walked three and struck out six in his first career compete game shutout. He improves to 6-4 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.93.

Offensively for the Raiders, Steffen drove in three RBI's top lead the team and three other players drove one RBI in the contest. Hamilton was three-for-four in the game with a double and a walk, while Parker and Shoup each chipped in a pair of hits. Biedenharn extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a third inning double and eight of the nine starters collected hits.

The Green and Gold improve to 30-18 overall on the season and have won 30 games for the first time since 2001. WSU improves to 17-8 in Horizon League play and tied the school record for league wins in a season.

Wright State will look to match last seasons win total as they take on Cleveland State in a twinbill on Saturday, May 12. The Raiders and Vikings meet at noon at Pipe Yard Stadium in Lorain, Ohio.
