Box Score Wright State trailed by just two at halftime, but could not overcome Cleveland State shooting 52 percent in the second half as the Vikings went on to a 68-54 Horizon League win in women's basketball action at the Wolstein Center Saturday night.
Whitney Lewis tied the game at 7-7 with a three-pointer three minutes into the game, but CSU followed with a 9-0 run, five of those from Kailey Klein, to go back in front. The Raiders, though, hung close the rest of the half and trailed just 32-30 at the break on a Charne Dixon baseline jumper in the final seconds.
Two Lewis foul shots again brought the Raiders to within two at 34-32 with 19:23 left and the margin was only 40-36 until the Vikings had a 9-2 run, including two Brittany Korth threes, to go up 49-38.
Wright State could get no closer than seven the rest of the way as Cleveland State broke the game open with a 9-0 burst to make it 64-48 with 3:41 to play.
The Raiders shot 48 percent overall, but the Vikings hit for 55 percent and were 17 of 21 from the foul line to just six of eight for Wright State. Cleveland State also forced 25 turnovers while committing 23, resulting in a 35-20 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Lewis led WSU with 18 points while Shey Peddy had 12, LaShawna Thomas eight and Kanisha Ward six along with seven assists.
Dominique Butler paced all scorers with 20 for Cleveland State (10-7, 4-2 Horizon), while Klein had 13 and Angel Roque 11.
Wright State, now 5-11 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League, returns home for two games next week, taking on Valparaiso on Thursday, January 24, at 7:00 and Butler on Saturday, January 26, at 1:00.
