Women Defeat Butler

Wright State trailed by four with 3:47 left, but outscored Butler 13-4 the rest of the way as the Raiders defeated the Bulldogs 70-65 in Horizon League women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Nutter Center.

Butler led much of the first half, but WSU hung close and took its first lead at 29-27 on a LaShawna Thomas jumper with 1:53 remaining in the period. Whitney Lewis followed on the next possession with a three pointer from the top of the key to put the Raiders up five heading into the break.

Wright State hit 12 of 18 shots in the first half compared to Butler shooting 39 percent.

The Raiders extended the advantage to 38-29 on a Shey Peddy fast-break layup with 16:44 left, but Butler responded with a 18-4 run over the next seven minutes, five each from Candyce Brown and Susan Lester, to go up 47-42.

The Bulldog lead then seesawed between one and four until two Lewis foul shots tied the game at 61 with 2:46 remaining. Lester hit one of two from the line to give Butler the edge at the 2:32 mark, but a Lewis layup put the Raiders up for good at 63-62 with 1:41 left.

Peddy followed on WSU's next possession with a three from the left side and then hit two foul shots at the 29.7-second mark to make it 68-62. Lewis added two more from the stripe with 19.4 seconds left before Butler's Azjah Bass rounded out the scoring with a three.

Wright State shot 50 percent from the field overall and hit 20 of 25 from the foul line, including 14 of 15 in the second half, while Butler shot 56 percent in the second half to end up at 48 percent for the game and was 14 of 17 from the line.

Peddy led the Raiders with 20 points, 14 in the second half, while Lewis added 18 points and eight rebounds. Thomas chipped in 13 points and four assists while Sierra Crayton had 12 off the bench.

Bass paced Butler (13-5, 3-4 Horizon) with 18 points while Lester had 15 points and seven rebounds and Lade Akande 12.

Wright State, now 7-11 overall and 4-3 in the Horizon League, heads to the Windy City next weekend for a pair of games, taking on UIC on Thursday, January 31, at 5:30 Eastern followed by Loyola on Saturday, February 2, at 5:00 Dayton time.
