Box Score Wright State rallied from a 16-point first half deficit to lead by seven with 5:38 to play, but Ball State outscored the Raiders 17-6 the rest of the way to pull out a 65-61 decision in women's basketball action at Worthen Arena Wednesday night.
The Cardinals scored the first five points of the game and used a 12-2 run to go up 31-15 with 3:48 to play in the first half. WSU cut into the margin on baskets from LaShawna Thomas and Ta-myra Davis, but Ball State still led 36-23 at the break.
Ball State shot 58 percent in the opening 20 minutes, including four of seven from three-point range, while Wright State hit for 37 percent.
The Raiders started on their comeback by scoring the first eight points of the second half, four each by Shey Peddy and Thomas, and after the Cardinals pushed the advantage back up to 10, Wright State scored 13 straight points to take the lead for the first time at 44-41 at the 11:17 mark.
An Audrey McDonald three made it 49-48 with 7:58 left, only to see WSU go on a 6-0 run, four from Thomas, to lead 55-48 with 5:38 remaining.
From there, however, Ball State took control as the Cardinals scored the next eight points to regain the advantage and after Davis hit a layup to put Wright State back in front 57-56 at the 2:40 mark, a Porchia Green three and another triple by McDonald gave BSU the lead for good.
A Peddy layup with 17.3 seconds remaining made the score 63-61, but McDonald hit two foul shots at the 17.1 second mark to round out the scoring.
Wright State shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 45 percent overall while Ball State ended up at 48 percent. The Raiders held a 36-27 rebounding advantage and led in points in the paint (40-18), points off of turnovers (23-21) and second-chance points (14-8), but the Cardinals hit nine of 14 three-pointers compared to just one of 15 for WSU.
Peddy led all scorers with 23 for the Raiders, while Thomas had 16 and Davis 13.
Green paced Ball State (4-3) with 22 points while McDonald had 15.
Wright State (3-5) is off until hosting Cincinnati on Tuesday, December 16, at 7:00.
