Box Score Wright State trailed by as much as 10 in the first half, by five at the break and again by five with 11:51 to play, but the Raiders outscored Butler 25-15 the rest of the way to pull out a 65-60 Horizon League decision over the Bulldogs Thursday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
LaShawna Thomas opened the scoring with a three, but that turned out to be the only lead WSU would have in the first half as Butler gradually built a 25-15 advantage following a Candace Jones three at the 7:48 mark.
Shey Peddy, though, answered with a three of her own and another triple from Thomas allowed the Raiders to close the deficit to 27-24. The Bulldogs twice went back up seven in the closing minutes of the period, but a last-second jumper by Charne Dixon trimmed the Bulldog lead to 33-28 at the break.
Wright State shot 55 percent in the first half and Butler 46 percent, but the Bulldogs had six more attempts thanks in part to eight offensive rebounds.
Lade Akande gave the Bulldogs a 41-32 advantage with a layup at the 16:08 mark of the second half, but that turned out to be the last basket for Butler over the next 12 minutes as the Raiders regained the lead at 46-45 on a Thomas layup with 7:07 remaining.
The Wright State edge seesawed between one and three until two free throw and a layup by Peddy made it 54-47 at the 5:08 mark. The Raiders still led by seven on a Sierra Crayton layup with 2:48 left, but Butler followed with an 8-2 run to close the deficit to 59-58, the final three coming on a three-point play from Brittany Bowen with 42 seconds remaining.
The Raiders faced a shot clock violation on their next possession, but Kanisha Ward beat the buzzer as she drove along the left baseline and hit a short jumper inside the lane.
Candace Jones hit two foul shots with eight seconds left, but Ward sealed the victory with two free throws at the 5.8-second mark and two more with 2.5 seconds remaining following a Butler turnover.
Wright State shot 60 in the second half to finish at 57 percent overall while the Bulldogs had just six field goals in 22 attempts the final 20 minutes to end up at 38 percent. WSU also hit 13 of 18 free throws in the second half.
Thomas led the Raiders with 20 points, tying her season high that she set at Cincinnati on December 11, while Peddy added 18. Crayton added eight off the bench with Ward scoring six of her seven in the final 11.6 seconds to go along with six assists.
Akande paced Butler (16-9, 6-8 Horizon) with 22, but no other Bulldog scored in double figures.
Wright State, now 11-13 overall and 8-5 in the Horizon League, concludes its trip through Indiana Saturday with a 2:30 Eastern matchup at Valparaiso.
