Softball Splits at Butler

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State softball team was three outs from a sweep in Horizon League action at Butler Thursday afternoon, but could not hold on to win the opener as the Bulldogs scored three times in the seventh to claim a 6-5 victory before the Raiders won the nightcap 5-1.

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Jherica Williams walked, stole second and scored on Kristen Bradshaw's double to left center. The Raiders then made it 3-0 in the fourth as they took advantage of a Butler error for one run with the other coming in on a RBI single from Michelle Logan, who had two hits overall in the game.

Butler tied the game with three in the bottom of the fifth, but Wright State looked to be in good shape as Williams hit her 13th home run of the season in the seventh, a two-run shot to right that also plated Jamie Perkins, who led off the frame with a hit to center.

The Bulldogs, however, would rally for the win as two walks, an infield hit and an error set the stage for Kelli Hahn, who drove in the final two runs with a single to left.

Game two was scoreless until WSU tallied a run in the third as Williams singled, stole second and came in on a hit to left off the bat of Allison Cox. The Raiders then broke the game open an inning later with three more runs on RBI singles by Perkins and Louie Haney and a bases loaded walk to Cox.

Wright State then rounded out its scoring in the sixth as Williams had a two-out hit, went to second on a wild pitch and came in as Bradshaw tripled to the fence in center.

Butler (15-21, 4-6 Horizon) scored an unearned run in the seventh, but Heather Bauer, in her first collegiate start, picked up her first win as she scattered six hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.

The first three batters in the Raider order--Perkins, Haney and Williams--each had two hits in the second game as did Briauna Birl.

Wright State, now 22-19 overall and 9-3 in the Horizon League, hosts a key three-game series this weekend against Loyola, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00.
