Box Score Wright State shot just 33 percent for the game as the Raiders dropped a 46-41 defensive struggle to the Butler Bulldogs in Horizon League women's basketball action at the Nutter Center Saturday afternoon.
WSU led 8-4 following two Ta-myra Davis foul shots with 15:18 remaining in the first half, but that turned out to be the biggest lead of the day for the Raiders as Butler answered by scoring the next six points. A LaShawna Thomas basket made it 15-12 at the 5:46 mark, only to see the Bulldogs turn the tables with a 7-1 run, including a Susan Lester three.
Wright State again took the lead at 20-19 on a pair of Thomas free throws with 1:13 left, but Tara Miller gave Butler a one-point edge at the break with a layup in the final minute.
BU shot 42 percent in the first half compared to 33 percent for WSU, but the Raiders were six of seven from the foul line while the Bulldogs were four of five.
Davis put the Raiders up 24-23 with a basket three minutes into the second half, but Lester followed with a jumper that gave Butler the lead for good. Wright State closed to within one three times and two on two other occasions the rest of the way, but the Bulldogs maintained the advantage before sealing the game on two Terra Burns foul shots with 17.8 seconds remaining.
WSU again shot 33 percent in the second half to end up at that same percentage overall while Butler was seven of 19 the final 20 minutes to finish at 40 percent. The Bulldogs went 15 of 18 from the foul line for the game, including 11 of 13 in the second half, while the Raiders were 10 of 14 from the stripe, four of seven after halftime.
Davis and Thomas each had 10 points to pace the Raider attack while Peddy added eight points along with six rebounds and six assists.
Lester led all scorers with 11 off the bench for Butler (9-6, 4-0 Horizon) while Terra Burns had 10 and Thornton and Akade eight each.
Wright State (6-9, 2-2 Horizon) heads to Wisconsin for a pair of games next week, starting with Milwaukee at U.S. Cellular Arena on Thursday, January 15, at 6:30 Dayton time.
