Women Rally for Win Over Cleveland State

Box Score

Wright State trailed for much of the game, but used a 17-5 run to take the lead for good and held on down the stretch for a 55-52 decision over the Cleveland State Vikings in Horizon League women's basketball action at the Nutter Center Saturday afternoon.

Cleveland State scored the first five points of the contest and maintained the edge throughout the opening half, with its biggest lead being 21-14 before heading into the break up 27-21. The Vikings shot 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including four of nine from three-point range, compared to 43 percent for Wright State, who was three of eight from behind the arc.

CSU again went up seven at 34-27 following a Kailey Klein jumper at the 15:51 mark of the second half, only to see the Raiders answer with a 9-1 run, seven coming from LaShawna Thomas, to take the lead for the first time at 36-35 on a Molly Fox layup with 12:45 remaining.

The Vikings regained the advantage at 40-36 on a Klein three and two Dominique Butler foul shots, but Wright State again put together a run, this time the decisive 17-5 burst, that gave the Raiders a 53-45 lead with 1:49 left.

Cleveland State scored the next six points, capped off by a Jessica Roque three with 4.3 seconds left, to draw to within two, but Kanisha Ward hit the second of two foul shots at the 3.5-second mark and a desperation half-court attempt from Roque at the horn was short.

WSU shot 41 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 42 percent overall while the Vikings cooled in the final 20 minutes, hitting for just 28 percent to end up at 37 percent. Cleveland State led in rebounds (35-32) and points off of turnovers (16-10), but the Raiders countered by holding the edge in points in the paint (30-16), second-chance points (13-10) and bench scoring (19-1).

Thomas led all scorers with 16 points for the Raiders while Davis posted a double-double of 10 points and as many rebounds, with eight points and seven rebounds coming in the second half.

Klein and Roque each scored 16 points for Cleveland State (10-9, 4-3 Horizon), while Dominique Butler had a near double-double of 10 points and nine boards.

Wright State (9-10, 5-3 Horizon) concludes its three-game homestand on Saturday, January 31, as the Raiders welcome in Detroit for a 1:00 matinee.
