Women Shoot Well, But Fall at Boston College 62-56

Box Score

The Wright State women's basketball team shot 47-percent in the contest, but host Boston College out-rebounded the Raiders 42-17 on their way to a 62-56 victory at the Conte Forum on Sunday afternoon. Kanisha Ward and Maria Bennett each chipped in 10 points for the Green and Gold, but WSU couldn't overcome a 24-0 advantage in second chance points from the Eagles.

Boston College opened up the game five straight points and led by eight points, 14-6, when Stefanie Murphy connected on a layup with 12:49 remaining in the opening frame. LaShawna Thomas hit a three pointer to cut the lead to five on the next possession, but a 9-3 run by BC opened up an 11 point lead for the Eagles with 6:45 led in the first half.

The lead would swell to 13 points when Jasmine Gill hit a free throw, making it a 27-14 contest, but the Green and Gold scored the final five points of the half to close the gap. Ta-myra Davis hit a lay-up and Bennett nailed a three pointer, send the Raiders to the locker room trailing by eight points, 27-19.

BC extended their lead to 12 points twice in the opening three minutes of the second half, but WSU would trim that to only four points at the 15:32 mark. Ward hit a pair of foul shots and Davis scored a lay-up to cut the deficit to 33-29 in favor of the home team.

Wright State would hang close for the next ten minutes of the game, with Boston College holding a 50-43 lead after a Fox bucket at 6:15. An 8-3 spurt from the Eagles would extend their lead back to double digits at 60-47 with 3:30 to play.

Ward would hit a pair of three pointers down the stretch and Bennett would add a nice backdoor lay-up to cut the deficit, but time would run short on Raiders.

Boston College outrebounded WSU 42-17 and outscored the Raiders 24-0 in second chance points. Bennett and Ward led the way with 10 points for the Green and Gold, while Davis grabbed six boards to go along with eight points. Wright State shot 47 percent from the field, compared to 43 percent for Boston College, and the Raiders connected on 69 percent from the free throw stripe.

Murphy paced all scorers with 16 points, while Carolyn Swords posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Wright State will take a nine-day break before traveling to Cincinnati to play the Bearcats on December 29. The Raiders, now 4-5 overall on the season, will tip off at 7:00 against UC.
