Women Fall at Butler

Box Score

A 13-0 Butler run to end the first half proved to be too much for Wright State to overcome as the Raiders dropped a 58-45 decision to the Bulldogs in Horizon League women's basketball action at Hinkle Fieldhouse Friday night.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good at 6-5 on a Susan Lester layup with 15:20 remaining in the first half, but WSU trailed by just two at 17-15 with 8:43 left following two Shey Peddy free throws.

Butler, though, scored the final 13 points of the period, the first eight by Melanie Thornton, to go up 30-15 at the break. The Bulldogs shot 59 percent over the opening 20 minutes while Wright State shot 21 percent.

Butler gradually built on the advantage in the second half, leading by as much as 49-23 before the Raiders closed out the game with a 22-9 run over the final 10:17.

Wright State shot 31 percent overall and was five of nine from the foul line compared to 55 percent and 10 of 12 at the stripe for the Bulldogs.

Peddy paced the Raiders with 16 points and had five assists and LaShawna Thomas added 11, nine coming in the second half, but no other Wright State player managed more than six.

Thornton led all scorers with 17 off the bench for Butler (13-8, 8-2 Horizon) while Brittany Bowen had 12, Lester 11 and Lade Akande 10.

Wright State (10-11, 6-4 Horizon) visits Valparaiso on Sunday, February 8, for a 2:30 Eastern tip.
