Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener at IUPUI 64-45

Box Score

Behind a double-double efforts from Tanni Scott and 15 points by LaShawna Thomas, the Wright State women's basketball team won its first game under new head coach Mike Bradbury Friday night, defeating the IUPUI Jaguars 64-45 at the Jungle in Indianapolis.

IUPUI led 16-9 eight minutes into the contest until WSU went on a 19-5 run over the next seven minutes, five coming from Courtney Boyd and four by Scott, to go in front 28-21.

After the Jaguars connected on a three, seven unanswered points by the Raiders, five by Thomas, gave Wright State a 35-24 halftime lead.

WSU hit 14 of 28 shots in the opening 20 minutes compared to just eight of 32 for IUPUI.

The Jaguars closed to within three by scoring the first eight points of the second half, only to see the Raiders answer with 17 straight of their own over a eight-minute span, nine of those coming from Fox.

IUPUI would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way as Bradbury became the first WSU women's basketball coach to win his first game since Arnelle Jackson led the Raiders to a 40-36 win at Rio Grande in the program's first-ever game on January 12, 1974.

It also marks the first time that the Raiders have won a season opener and won an opener on the road since a 74-58 decision at Morehead State on November 21, 2004.

For the game, Wright State shot 41 percent from the field and was 11 of 13 at the stripe compared to 28 percent field goal shooting and eight of 15 at the line for IUPUI. The Raiders controlled the boards by a 51-36 margin and led in points in the paint (32-16) and second-chance points (14-4).

Fox posted a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds to pace WSU, both of those career highs, while Scott also recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards, also career bests. Thomas added 15 points and six assists and Boyd, in her regular-season college debut, chipped in a near double-double of nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Wright State closes out the Hoosier State swing Sunday with a 1:00 contest at Ball State.
