Women's Basketball Drops 64-63 Heartbreaker at Ball State

Box Score

Wright State led by as much as 11 in the first half and by six with 12 minutes to play, but Ball State rallied each time and held on in the final seconds for a 64-63 decision in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Worthen Arena.

Tied at 15 nine minutes into the contest, Wright State went back in front by scoring six straight, including back-to-back layup from Ta-myra Davis. After two Ball State foul shots, the Raiders tacked on seven more in a row, a run started on a Maria Bennett three, to make it 28-17 at the 5:04 mark of the first half.

The Cardinals, however, closed the half with a 14-3 run to again tie the game at 31 heading into the break.

WSU shot 46 percent from the field over the opening 20 minutes compared to just 29 percent for BSU, but the Cardinals also hit 10 of 13 foul shots while the Raiders missed both of their free throw attempts.

Ball State carried its momentum into the second half by scoring the first seven points, only to see the Raiders answer right back with seven of their own, including a three and jumper from Courtney Boyd. Boyd later added back-to-back threes to put WSU up 46-40 with 12:53 remaining.

Maria Bennett banked in a three from the left wing to make it 56-54 at the 6:19 mark, but that turned out to be the final lead of the day for the Raiders as the Cardinals scored nine of the next 11 points to go up 63-58.

A pair of LaShawna Thomas drew WSU to within one and the Raiders had possession with 19.6 second remaining, but a missed layup resulted in Ball State going to the foul line. The free throw was missed, but time ran out on the scramble for the rebound.

Wright State shot 42 percent overall and was 10 of 30 from three-point range while Ball State shot 36 percent, including seven of 17 from behind the arc. The Cardinals, though, were 13 of 22 at the foul line compared to just one of six for the Raiders.

Boyd paced WSU with 19 points off the bench, 16 of those coming in the second half, while Thomas posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 assists along with six rebounds. Bennett added 11 points and Molly Fox 12 rebounds.

Emily Maggert led Ball State (1-1) with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds while Suzanne Grossnickle had a near double-double of 16 points and nine boards.

Wright State (1-1) concludes its three-game road swing on Sunday, November 21, as the Raiders visit Delaware State for a 2:00 contest.
