Box Score Wright State rallied back from a nine-point second-half deficit to trail by only two in the final minute, but came up short as the Longwood Lancers held on for a 74-70 win over the Raiders in women's basketball action in Farmville, Virginia, Saturday afternoon.
WSU led 15-10 until Longwood scored 10 straight points to go up 25-20 with 11:52 remaining in the first half. The Lancers extended the margin to 40-30 on a jumper by Chelsea Coward at the 4:36 mark, but the Raiders closed the half with a 13-2 run, five each coming from LaShawna Thomas and Maria Bennett, to take a 43-42 lead into the break.
Longwood shot 57 percent in the first half, including six of eight from three-point range, while Wright State shot 43 percent and was seven of 18 from behind the arc.
Kayla Lamotte opened the second half scoring with a layup, only to see the Lancers take the lead for good by scoring the next 11 points. Longwood led by as much as 59-50 with 10:22 to play, but WSU chipped away and only trailed 72-69 as Courtney Boyd hit a three from the left corner with 2:23 left.
Molly Fox hit one of two foul shots to make 72-70 with 52.8 seconds remaining, but Coward connected on two at the 10.2-second mark to round out the scoring.
Both teams struggled offensively the final 20 minutes as the Raiders shot just 24 percent, including three of 18 from three, while Longwood was at 28 percent. The Lancers, however, hit 13 of 15 foul shots in the second half and 17 of 20 overall compared to just six of nine for the game for Wright State.
Fox led WSU with a double-double of 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds off the bench while Thomas had 17 points and eight assists, 13 of those points coming in the first half. Bennett added 13 while Tanni Scott gathered in 12 rebounds.
Coward paced Longwood (2-6) with 18 points and seven assists.
Wright State (4-4) wraps up its five-game road swing with two games next week, taking on Southern Illinois on Tuesday, December 14, at 8:00 Eastern followed by Cincinnati on Saturday, December 18, at 2:00.
