Women Pull Out 73-65 Win Over UCF

Box Score

Down two with five minutes to go, the Wright State women's basketball team finished with a 14-4 run to defeat the UCF Knights 73-65 Wednesday night at Wright State's Nutter Center behind career nights from LaShawna Thomas and Molly Fox.

Jelisa Caldwell gave the Knights the early lead with a three, but WSU followed by scoring 15 of the next 17 points, including 13 straight, to go up 15-5 with 14:25 remaining in the opening half.

UCF, though, answered right back with seven in a row and later regained the lead at 21-19 on another Caldwell three at the 8:14 mark. The Knights stayed in front for most of the rest of the period and led 35-31 at the break.

UCF shot 43 percent from the field in the first half, including five of 10 from behind the arc compared to 40 percent for WSU, who was three of 10 from three-point range.

Another Caldwell three to start the second half pushed the margin to seven, only to see Wright State go back in front with a 10-0 burst, the final six coming from Thomas.

Caldwell's fifth three-pointer of the night, however, gave the Knights a 43-42 edge with 12:57 to play and, despite the Raiders going back up five on five different occasions, UCF led 61-59 on two D'Nay Daniels foul shots at the 5:11 mark.

Thomas, though, tied it with a jumper and Fox put the Raiders ahead for good with two foul shots with 4:16 to go. A Shaunda Sandifer three-point play at the 2:28 mark made it 67-62 and layups from Fox and Sandifer capped off a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 71-62 with 1:21 remaining.

WSU hit 15 of 27 shots the final 20 minutes for 56 percent in finishing at 47 percent while UCF made just eight of 36 attempts for 22 percent in ending the game at 32 percent overall. The Raiders held a 48-33 rebounding advantage and led 32-18 in points in the paint.

Thomas led all scorers with 27 for Wright State, eclipsing her career of 25 that she set at UIC last February 11 and tied at Akron on December 4. She also finished with a double-double as she recorded 10 assists and added six rebounds.

Fox hit 10 of 12 shots to finish with 25 points, besting the 21 she had in the season opener at IUPUI on November 12. She also posted a double-double as she collected 11 rebounds.

Caldwell paced UCF (5-6) with 21 points, 15 coming in the first half, while Daniels posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The seven nonleague wins for the Raiders are the most for the program since starting Division I conference play as a member of the North Star Conference in the 1990-91 season. WSU had previously won six in 1994-95, 1995-96 and 2004-05.

Wright State (7-4) now turns its attention to the start of Horizon League play next week as the Raiders head to Milwaukee for a New Year's Eve matchup starting at 2:00 Eastern followed by a trip to Green Bay on Sunday, January 2, at 8:00 Dayton time.
