Women Drop Horizon League Quarterfinal Game at Butler

Box Score

Wright State saw its season come to an end Wednesday night as the Butler Bulldogs defeated the Raiders 70-57 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Erica Richardson opened the scoring with a jumper just 10 seconds into the contest, but that turned out to be the only lead WSU would enjoy on the night as Brittany Bowen followed with a three to put Butler in front to stay. Kanisha Ward drew the Raiders to within two with a layup at the 15:14 mark, only to see the Bulldogs respond with a 10-1 run over the next two minutes to extend the margin to 23-12 with 13:03 remaining in the half.

Wright State cut the deficit to seven on a Molly Fox jumper with 11:52 left, but Butler scored the next nine points and closed the period on a 19-6 run overall to take a 42-22 halftime lead.

The Raiders shot 42 percent overall from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but were just one of seven from three-point range, compared to 58 percent shooting for Butler, who hit six of nine from behind the arc. The Bulldogs were also eight of nine at the foul line to just one of two for Wright State.

WSU would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way as they finished the night shooting at 46 percent while Butler was at 49 percent. The Bulldogs, however, connected on nine of 15 three-pointers and were 13 of 14 at the foul line while the Raiders were four of 14 from behind the arc and three of five at the line.

Wright State (11-19) was led by LaShawna Thomas with 22 points, 14 of those coming in the second half, while Ward wrapped up her collegiate career with 10 points along with five assists and seven steals. Fox had eight off the bench and Richardson, also playing in her final game, added seven.

Butler (22-8), who will face #3 seed Detroit in the first of Friday's semifinals in Green Bay, was paced by Lester's 18 off the bench while Thornton just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Devin Brierly had 11.
