Box Score Wright State trailed 7-0 after two innings, but scored 11 runs over the next two frames, including seven in the fourth, and held on from there for an 11-9 win over Butler in the winner's bracket semifinals of the Horizon League Softball Tournament in Cleveland Thursday afternoon.
It was all Butler in the early going as the Bulldogs took advantage of three Raider errors in scoring three times in the first and then added four more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
WSU, though, started on its comeback with four runs in the third. A Justine Shilt triple to right center drove in Kristen Bradshaw and Jamie Perkins followed with a hit to left to knock in Shilt. Mollie Berry then reached and advanced to third on an error by the Butler right fielder as Perkins scored and Katie Kine plated Berry with a single to right.
The Raiders went in front to stay with a seven-run fourth. A Kristen Bradshaw hit along with two Bulldog errors resulted in Bradshaw scoring and an Allison Cox infield hit tied the game at 7-7. After Briauna Birl had a two-run hit up the middle to give Wright State the lead, Bradshaw tripled to right center to drive in two more and make it 11-7.
A two-run home run by Butler's Annie Dolan in the fifth cut the margin to 11-9, but the Raiders held on from there as Melanie Heyne threw 1.2 shutout innings to pick up her second save of the season.
Cox (9-4) was the winning pitcher as she allowed two runs in four innings of relief, striking out two. Offensively, Bradshaw led the way with three hits while Shilt and Kine had two each.
Wright State (27-27-1) now advances to the winner's bracket final Friday at 2:30 as the #2 seed Raiders take on #1 seed and host Cleveland State.
