Women Hold On for 63-62 Decision Over Detroit

Box Score

Molly Fox scored a career-high 28 points, including the decisive foul shot with 1:10 remaining as the Wright State women's basketball team held on the rest of the way for a 63-62 win over the Detroit Titans in Horizon League action at Wright State's Nutter Center Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders scored the first five points of the contest on a Fox layup and a Courtney Boyd three, only to see Detroit answer with five of its own on a Dominique Dixon triple and a Lauren Allen basket.

The score would then be tied seven more times in the half with eight lead changes before WSU closed the period with a 10-4 run over the final five minutes, seven coming from Ta-myra Davis, to give the Raiders a 29-24 halftime advantage.

Wright State shot 39 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to just 26 percent for the Titans, but Detroit converted nine Raider turnovers into 11 points.

The WSU lead seesawed between three and eight before a Fox jumper and a LaShawna Thomas layup pushed the margin into double figures at 46-36 with 10:40 remaining.

Detroit, however, used four three-pointers over the next four minutes, the final one by Cherridy Thornton, as part of a 18-6 run to go up 54-52 at the 6:32 mark.

Fox hit two foul shots and a layup to give Wright State the lead again at 58-56 with 4:40 to go, but a Yar Shayok basket and two free throws by Jalesa Jones put the Titans up two.

A Thomas jumper and a Fox layup made it 62-60 WSU with 2:23 to play before Jones tied it with a jumper.

Fox hit one of two foul shots with 1:03 remaining to make it 63-62 and it stayed that way after each team committed a turnover. Detroit called a timeout at the 6.5-second mark, but a shot by Jones was too strong and WSU had the rebound with 1.2 seconds left.

A Wright State offensive foul on the inbounds play, though, gave the Titans another chance, but an inbounds pass to Dixon, who was trying for the quick shot, went through her hands as time expired.

The Raiders shot 45 percent for the game compared to 35 percent for Detroit, but the Titans managed 14 more field goal attempts thanks to forcing 25 turnovers, which also resulted in a 28-13 difference in points off of turnovers.

WSU held a 44-34 rebounding advantage and made 11 of 16 at the foul line compared to 10 of 17 for Detroit.

Fox led all scorers with 28 points, bettering the 26 she scored at Milwaukee on New Year's Eve. She was 11 of 14 from the field and posted a double-double as she added 12 rebounds.

Thomas chipped in 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Raiders while Shaunda Sandifer collected 10 rebounds. Davis had a near double-double of nine points and nine boards off the bench.

Dixon paced Detroit (8-8, 2-3 Horizon) with 19 points while Shayok recorded a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Thornton chipped in 12 points off the bench.

Wright State (10-6, 3-2 Horizon) heads to Northeast Ohio for a pair of games next weekend, taking on Youngstown State on Thursday, January 20, at 5:15 followed by Cleveland State on Saturday, January 22, at 4:00.
