Box Score Down six with 10:35 to play, the Wright State women's basketball team outscored Youngstown State 19-10 the rest of the way to pull out a 64-61 Horizon League decision over the Penguins Thursday night at the Beeghly Center.
Three Maria Bennett three-pointers helped WSU jump out to a 13-7 lead six minutes into the game, only to see Youngstown State outscore the Raiders 17-6 over the next eight minutes to go up 24-19.
The Penguins still led 29-25 after a Brandi Brown three at the 3:54 mark before Wright State closed out the period with a 7-2 run, four coming from LaShawna Thomas, to take a 32-31 halftime lead.
WSU shot 48 percent in the opening 20 minutes, including four of nine from behind the arc, while the Penguins hit for 39 percent and were five of 12 from three.
Youngstown State regained the advantage early in the second half and two Brown foul shots made it 51-45 at the 10:35 mark.
A pair of Thomas jumpers along with a Bennett three, though, put WSU back in front by one and neither team had more than a two-point lead until a Thomas basket extended the Raider margin to 63-59 with 1:58 remaining.
Brown answered with a jumper to again make it a one-possession game and it stayed that way as Thomas hit a foul shot at the 21.3-second mark to make it 64-61.
The Penguins had two chances to tie the game down the stretch, but missed a pair of three-point attempts as WSU held on for the victory.
Wright State finished with a strong night statistically as the Raiders hit 11 of 17 shots in the second half for 65 percent to finish at 54 percent overall. WSU was also seven of 11 at the foul line and held a 37-20 rebounding advantage.
Youngstown State, meanwhile, shot 41 percent for the game.and committed just 14 turnoers compared to 26 for the Raiders, resulting in a 25-13 differential in points off of turnovers.
Thomas finished with 17 points, all but four coming in the second half, and dished out nine assists while Molly Fox posted a near double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Bennett added 15 and Shaunda Sandifer gathered in nine rebounds.
Brown paced all scorers with 23 for Youngstown State (3-15, 1-6 Horizon) while Kenya Middlebrooks added 14.
Wright State (11-6, 4-2 Horizon), which matches its entire win total from last season with the victory, wraps up the Northeast Ohio swing on Saturday with a 4:00 matchup at Cleveland State.
