Women Win at Cleveland State

Box Score

The Wright State defense allowed its lowest point total of the season and Ta-myra Davis had a season-high 17 points off the bench as the Raiders won their fourth straight Saturday afternoon, defeating Cleveland State 58-42 in Horizon League women's basketball action at the Wolstein Center.

Cleveland State opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but that turned to be the Vikings' only lead and only three of the game as WSU went in front to stay at 7-5 on a LaShawna Thomas jumper with 14:28 remaining in the first half. The Raider margin was still two until a 10-2 run made it 19-9 at the 5:20 mark.

CSU cut the deficit to 24-17 on two Destinee Blue free throws with 2:17 left, only to see Wright State use a 5-0 burst from Davis to lead 29-19 at the break.

The Raiders shot just 32 percent in the opening 20 minutes and were only two of 12 from behind the arc, but Cleveland State shot 25 percent overall and was one of nine from three.

A pair of Courtney Boyd threes pushed the lead to 35-21 early in the second half and WSU gradually built on the advantage from there, leading by as much 47-27 on a Davis basket with 9:35 to go. The Vikings would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Wright State shot 33 percent for the contest and was five for 25 from three-point range, but the defense held Cleveland State to 25 percent shooting overall, including one of 19 from three. The Raiders also held a 48-41 rebounding edge and led 30-16 in points in the paint and 17-10 in points off of turnovers.

Davis paced WSU with a season-high 17 points off the bench and posted a near double-double with nine rebounds. Her previous high this season was 12 at Akron on December 4. LaShawna Thomas had nine points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Shawnita Garland had 13 points to lead Cleveland State (11-8, 4-4 Horizon) while Blue had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Wright State (12-6, 5-2 Horizon) will host a pair of games next week, taking on UIC on Thursday, January 27, at 7:00, followed by Loyola on Saturday, January 29, at 2:00.
