Box Score The Wright State women's basketball team trailed 36-32 late in the first half, only to see UIC score the final eight points of the period and maintain a double-digit lead in the second half for a 84-69 decision over the Raiders in Horizon League action Thursday night at Wright State's Nutter Center.
WSU jumped out to a 9-4 lead following a Courtney Boyd three and led 12-8 after the freshman guard hit another triple before the Flames used a 13-3 run to take the lead for good at 21-15 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
Ta-myra Davis drew the Raiders to within one at 21-20 with a jumper, but UIC responded with another burst, this time 10-2 over the next two minutes. A Davis layup and four LaShawna Thomas foul shots made it 36-32 at the 3:12 mark until the Flames closed out the period by scoring the final eight points, four coming from Kiara Strickland, to lead 44-32 at the break.
Wright State shot 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including four of eight from three-point range, but UIC shot 50 percent and had 13 more attempts thanks to seven offense rebounds and forcing 13 turnovers, resulting in a 15-4 differential in points off of turnovers and 8-4 in second-chance points.
The Flames pushed the lead up to 18 six different times in the second half before WSU cut the deficit to 10 twice on threes from Kayla Lamotte and KC Elkins. The Raiders, however, could get no closer as UIC wrapped up the scoring by tallying the game's final five points.
The shooting percentage were nearly similar as the Flames shot 47.1 percent overall, 31.8 percent from three, compared to 46.7 and 31.6 percent, respectively for Wright State. UIC, though, forced 18 turnovers while committing 13, resulting in a 25-6 margin in points off of turnovers.
The Flames also hit their first 11 free throws attempts of the game and made 13 of 16 altogether while WSU was just seven of 12.
Thomas led the Raiders with 19 points while Molly Fox had a near double-double of 16 points and nine rebounds. Lamotte chipped in a season-high 10 off the bench, all coming in the second half.
Briana Hinkle paced all scorers with 25 for UIC (9-10, 4-4 Horizon) on 10 of 14 shooting while Taylor Foulks added 16 and Shameia Green 15. Jasmine Bailey recorded a double-double of 13 points and as many rebounds.
Wright State (12-7, 5-3 Horizon) closes out the first round of league play on Saturday as the Raiders take on Loyola in a 2:00 matchup at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium.
