Box Score Wright State shot just 36 percent for the game as the Raiders dropped a 70-58 decision to the Butler Bulldogs in Horizon League women's basketball action at Wright State's Nutter Center Thursday night.
A LaShawna Thomas three gave WSU a 3-2 advantage one minute into the contest, but that turned out to be the only lead the Raiders would have on the night as Butler went back in front for good with a 9-2 run over the next five minutes.
Wright State followed with a 6-0 spurt to tie the game at 11 with 12:22 remaining in the first half, but after the Raiders knotted the score again at 16 at the 7:05 mark, two three-pointers from Alyssa Pittman and one from Becca Bornhorst helped the Bulldogs take a 27-20 halftime lead.
Butler hit 10 of 26 shots in the opening 20 minutes for 39 percent while WSU was nine of 29 for 31 percent, including one of 13 from behind the arc.
The Bulldogs outscored the Raiders 11-4 in the first five minutes of the second half to go up 38-24, only to see Wright State rallied to within five at 43-38 with 10:35 to play, a 14-5 run capped off by a pair of Maria Bennett threes.
Brittany Bowen, however, answered with a three and a jumper from the senior forward along with two more Pittman threes pushed the Butler lead back up to 54-44 with eight minutes remaining. WSU would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs shot 54 percent in the second half to finish at 46 percent overall and were eight of 22 from three-point range compared to 36 percent altogether for the Raiders, who were five of 25 from behind the arc.
Wright State outscored Butler 30-22 in the paint, but the Bulldogs led 19-12 in second-chance points.
Thomas had 16 points and six assists for the Raiders while Molly Fox nearly posted a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Shaunda Sandifer collected 10 boards.
Bowen had a near double-double of 19 points and nine rebounds for Butler (8-6, 2-0 Horizon) while Chloe Hamilton had 19 points and eight boards. Pittman added 13 off the bench.
Wright State (8-6, 1-2 Horizon) continues its three-game homestand on Saturday with a 2:00 contest against Valparaiso.
