Box Score Wright State set a school record with 13 three-pointers, including a record eight from Maria Bennett, as the Raiders rolled to a 90-67 Horizon League women's basketball win over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon at Wright State's Nutter Center.
The score was tied three times in the first eight minutes before a 10-0 run, half of those coming from Bennett, gave WSU a 21-11 lead with 9:18 remaining in the first half. The margin then seesawed between seven and 13 the rest of the period until Bennett connected on a three in the closing seconds to make it 39-29 at the break.
Wright State hit 16 of 31 shots in the opening 20 minutes for 52 percent, including five of 12 from behind the arc, while the Crusaders were at 36 percent.
Two threes and a three-point play from Betsy Adams in the first three minutes of the second half cut the Valparaiso deficit to 45-38 and Adams later hit another three to make it 52-43 before WSU put the game out of reach with a 21-5 run over an 8:34 span, a spurt that featured four more Bennett three-pointers.
Bennett connected on her eighth triple of the game at the 4:58 mark to set a new Raider record for threes in a game. The previous record of seven was set by Joy Westendorf at UIC on March 5, 1994 and was tied by Lori Blanchard against Detroit on March 3, 1996 and by Chanda Hollingsworth twice, the first versus Marshall on December 13, 2000 and the second at West Virginia six days later.
A KC Elkins three with 2:07 to play set a new Wright State record for three-pointers in a game with 13, eclipsing the 12 made earlier this season at Cincinnati on December 18.
WSU shot 51 percent the final 20 minutes, including eight of 13 from three, in scoring 51 points, the most points for the Raiders in a second half since tallying 55 points against IPFW on November 24, 2004.
For the game, WSU shot 52 percent from the field, including 13 of 25 on three-pointers, compared to 38 percent for Valparaiso, who was nine of 23 from behind the arc. The Raiders outscored the Crusaders 30-16 in the paint, 20-11 in points off of turnovers and 26-12 in second-chance points.
Bennett led all scorers with a career-best 26 points, bettering the 18 she scored at Cincinnati. She was eight of 12 from three and nine of 13 from the field overall.
LaShawna Thomas added 22 points for Wright State along with eight assists and six rebounds while Molly Fox scored 18 points on eight of 11 shooting with seven rebounds.
Adams paced Valparaiso (3-12, 0-3 Horizon) with 21 points, all but two coming in the second half, while Tabitha Gerardot had a near double-double of 13 points and nine rebounds and Gina Lange chipped in 11.
Wright State (9-6, 2-2 Horizon) wraps up the three-game homestand on Saturday, January 15, with a 2:00 matchup against Detroit.
