Box Score The women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point second half deficit and led with two minutes remaining, only to see Central Michigan score seven of the game's final eight points for a 65-60 decision Tuesday in the championship game of the Wright State Invitational Presented by Holiday Inn.
WSU used a 10-0 run, capped off by threes from Courtney Boyd and KC Elkins, to go up 18-12 with 10:21 remaining in the first half before the Chippewas answered with a 14-0 run of their own, five each by Crystal Bradford and Jordan LaDuke. CMU maintained the advantage the rest of the way in the period and led 30-25 at the break.
Central Michigan shot 27 percent from the field, but was a perfect seven for seven at the foul line, while Wright State hit for 24 percent and was five for eight at the stripe.
The Chippewas scored the first four points of the second half and went up 44-34 on two Kerby Tamm free throws with 14:03 to play. WSU, though, responded with a 19-8 run over the next six minutes, nine by Boyd, to regain the lead at 53-52 on a Breanna Stucke triple at the 8:22 mark.
Stucke connected on another three to make it a four-point game, but Central Michigan came back with five straight to lead 57-56. Neither team then had more than a one-point edge as Wright State regained the lead at 59-58 on two foul shots by Kim Demmings with 2:20 left.
It was tied at 60 as Stucke hit one of two free throws at the 1:07 mark, but that proved to be the final points of the day for the Raiders. Brandie Baker hit two foul shots with 42.9 seconds left and after Skylar Miller made one of two at the 13.2-second mark, LaDuke iced it with two with 3.2 seconds remaining.
Both teams shot 29 percent for the game overall as WSU was 10 of 38 from behind the arc compared to five of 18 for Central Michigan. The Chippewas, however, was 20 of 28 at the foul line while the Raiders were 14 of 19.
Demmings led all scorers with 18 ponts for the Raiders and nearly had a triple-double as she added nine rebounds and eight assists. Boyd chipped in 17 off the bench and Molly Fox posted a double-double of 10 points and 15 boards.
Bradford paced Central Michigan (7-5) with a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds while Jessica Green had 11 off the bench, LaDuke a near double-double of nine points and 12 boards and Miller nine off the bench.
In the third-place game, Southeast Missouri held off Longwood 56-52.
Wright State (7-5) opens Horizon League play on Wednesday, December 28, as the Raiders host Valparaiso for a 7:00 contest.
