Women Slip Past Butler 48-47

Box Score

A Kim Demmings runner with 4.7 seconds left lifted the Wright State women's basketball team to a 48-47 Horizon League win over Butler Saturday night at WSU's Nutter Center.

Tied at 10 midway through the first half, Butler regained the lead with an 8-0 run, four each coming from Amanda Raker and Sarah Hamm, and, despite back-to-back baskets by Sarah Hunter and Shaunda Sandifer, the Bulldogs took a 22-16 advantage into the break.

Butler shot 35 percent in the opening 20 minutes overall and was two of 11 from three-point range while WSU shot 21 percent overall and was two of 16 from behind the arc.

Jumpers from Sandifer and Demmings trimmed the margin to two in the opening minute of the second half and neither team had more than a four-point lead until an 8-0 Wright State run, five by Sandifer, put the Raiders up 39-32 with 6:18 remaining.

The Bulldogs, however, came right back with a 13-2 burst and looked to be in control as Devin Brierly hit the first of two foul shots to give Butler a 45-41 edge with 31.8 seconds left.

Brierly, though, missed the second and Demmings followed with a pair at the line at the 22.6-second mark to make it 45-43.  Brierly answered with two free throws to again make it a four-point game with 21.2 ticks to go, but Demmings followed with a three-point play to cut the deficit to one at the 15.3-second mark.

A traveling call gave the ball back to WSU with 13.3 seconds left and Demmings connected on the game-winner as she drove down the right side of the lane and was fouled as she hit the shot with 4.7 seconds remaining.

Demmings missed the foul shot to keep the margin at one, but Brierly's three attempt at the horn was short.

Both teams struggled all night with their shooting as the Bulldogs hit for 33 percent, but were three of 19 from three-point range, while Wright State shot 28 percent and was four of 26 from behind the arc.  WSU, though, held a 13-8 edge on offensive rebounds and that led to a 12-3 differential in second-chance points.

Sandifer paced all scorers with 21 points for the Raiders, eclipsing her previous high of 19, set last February 24 at Loyola.  She also posted a double-double as she added a season-high 14 reounds.  Demmings chipped in 16 points, all of those coming in the second half.

Hamm led Butler (4-9, 0-2 Horizon) with 15 points off the bench while Douglas had 10.

Wright State (9-5, 2-0 Horizon) heads to the Windy City for a pair of games next week, taking on Loyola on Thursday, January 5, at 8:00 Eastern followed by UIC on Saturday, January 7, at 4:00 Dayton time.
