Box Score Wright State outscored Detroit 15-4 to start the second half to build a 20-point lead and held off a Titan rally in posting a 75-55 win in Horizon League women's basketball action at Calihan Hall Saturday afternoon.
Six straight LaShawna Thomas points broke an early 10-10 deadlock and the Raiders capped off a 13-2 run on a Ta-myra Davis putback to go up 23-12 with 7:56 remaining in the first half. Detroit would close to within seven late in the period before WSU went into the break with a 34-25 advantage.
Wright State shot 41 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and was four of 13 from three-point range while Detroit shot just 31 percent and missed all nine of its three-point attempts.
Lauren Allen started off the scoring in the second half with a jumper for the Titans, only to see the Raiders score the next 10 points, eight of those coming from Courtney Boyd. WSU later extended the margin to 49-29 with 12:07 to play on a Maria Bennett triple and another Davis layup.
Detroit tried to make a comeback, trimming the deficit to 58-50 on a Jalesa Jones layup with six minutes left, but the Raiders would win going away as they outscored the Titans 17-5 the rest of the way, six by Thomas and five from Kayla Lamotte.
The 20-point win was the largest margin of victory in a Horizon League road game for the Raiders since a 61-41 decision at Milwaukee on January 15, 2009. WSU won 75-53 at Southern Illinois earlier this season on December 14.
Wright State hit 13 of 24 shots in the second half to finish at 46 percent overall, including eight of 25 from three-point range, compared to just 28 percent for Detroit, who was five of 25 from three. The Raiders finished with a 49-38 rebound advantage.
Thomas nearly posted a double-double as she led WSU with 24 points, 16 in the first half, along with nine rebounds. Lamotte added 13 off the bench, all but one coming in the final 20 minutes, while Boyd had 11 and Bennett 10. Davis recorded 12 rebounds and Shaunda Sandifer eight.
Dixon paced Detroit (10-13, 4-8 Horizon) with 15 points, 11 in the second half, while Yar Shayok recorded a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Wright State (15-8, 8-4 Horizon) clinched at least a .500 record for the season with the win. The Raiders have had just two winning seasons since joining Division I in 1987-88 (17-11 in 1987-88 and 19-11 in 2004-05). WSU will host a pair of games next week, starting with Cleveland State at 7:00 on Thursday, February 17, followed by Youngstown State on Saturday, February 19, at 2:00.
