Women Fall to Cleveland State 74-66

Box Score

Wright State looked to be in control with a 15-point lead early in the second half, only to see Cleveland State outscore the Raiders 44-21 over the final 16:07 to pull out a 74-66 win in Horizon League women's basketball action at Wright State's Nutter Center Thursday evening.

Neither team had more than a four-point lead until LaShawna Thomas hit a jumper and two free throws to put WSU up 26-19 with 3:49 remaining in the first half. CSU scored six straight to close to within one, only to see the Raiders answer with seven straight of their own, the final five coming from Ta-myra Davis, to take a 33-25 halftime advantage.

The Vikings shot 37 percent in the first half compared to 35 percent for Wright State, but the Raiders had seven more shot attempts thanks to a 28-11 rebounding edge, 13-2 on the offensive end, which also resulted in a 12-2 differential in second-chance points. WSU also made seven of eight foul shots while Cleveland State was two of four.

Wright State started the second half with a 12-5 spurt, including threes by Courtney Boyd and Maria Bennett, to build its biggest lead of the night at 45-30 with 16:19 to play in the game.

CSU, however, began its comeback from there, outscoring the Raiders 25-11 over the next six minutes to cut the deficit to 56-55. Another Bennett triple along with a Davis layup pushed the margin back up to six, but the Vikings again trailed by one at 63-62 on an Honesty King three at the 7:29 mark.

Neither team then scored for the next 4:15 until a Shawnita Garland three gave Cleveland State the lead. Two Davis foul shots tied the game before the Vikings went in front to stay on two Garland free throws and another King triple.

Wright State would get no closer than four the rest of the way as CSU closed out a 17-3 run over the final 8:12 with four foul shots in the closing minute.

The Vikings shot 52 percent in the second half, including seven of 13 from behind the arc, to finish at 44 percent overall, 40 percent from three. Cleveland State also hit 16 of 22 free throws, 14 of 18 the final 20 minutes, and forced 23 turnovers while committing 11, resulting in a 24-7 edge in points off of turnovers.

The Raiders, meanwhile shot 43 percent in the second half to end up a 39 percent for the game, but were just five of 16 from three. WSU dominated the boards by a 47-24 count, 19-4 on the offensive end, but only had a 17-6 edge in second-chance points.

Thomas led Wright State with 19 points while Davis hit all six shots in posting a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bennett had nine points and Shaunda Sandifer scored eight points and collected 12 rebounds.

Garland paced all scorers with 23 for Cleveland State (15-10, 8-6 Horizon), 16 in the second half, while King hit six threes in tallying 18 off the bench, 15 coming after halftime. Janelle Adams had 15, 11 in the second half, and Shalonda Winton chipped in 14.

Wright State (15-9, 8-5 Horizon) looks to bounce back on Saturday as the Raiders host Youngstown State. The game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the WSU men's game with Hofstra, which starts at 11 am.
