Box Score For the second straight day, the Wright State baseball team rallied in the eighth inning, but fell a run short in the end as Ole Miss held on for a 6-5 win over the Raiders Sunday in Oxford, Mississippi.
The Rebels scored first with a run in the third before WSU tied it in the fourth. With one out, Ryan Ashe reached on an infield single and after Justin Kopale doubled to left to put runners on second and third, Kody Krizman's groundout to second plated Ashe.
Mississippi went back in front with a run in its half of the fourth, only to see Wright State tied it with a run in the sixth, again after the leadoff batter had been retired. The Raiders loaded the bases on a Zach Tanner hit to right, Ashe being hit by a pitch and a Kopale walk and, again, Krizman drove in a run with a grounder to second.
Ole Miss (3-0) took the lead for good with four in the bottom of the sixth, but WSU would close to within one with three in the eighth. Tanner led off with a hit to left and advanced to third as Ashe had another infield hit and went to second on a throwing error. Kopale followed with a single to left to drive in Tanner and Ashe and after moving up to second on a wild pitch, came in to score on a Sam Picchiotti single up the middle.
Wright State would get no closer, however, as Rebel pitcher Brett Huber retired all five batters he faced, including two strikeouts, to record the save.
Tanner paced the Raider offense with three hits and two runs scored with Dan Marsh, Jake Hibberd, Ashe and Kopale collecting two hits each. For the second consecutive game, WSU finished with one more hit (12-11) than Mississippi.
Wright State (0-3) returns to action next weekend at The Citadel Challenge in Charleston, South Carolina. The Raiders will face Old Dominion (Noon) and The Citadel (4:00) on Friday, Old Dominion on Saturday (11:00) and The Citadel (11:00) on Sunday.
